Job Purpose

Ensure teachers are meeting Met students’ educational needs and delivering the relevant curriculum, ensuring that each student achieves academic success up to their potential, while US Common Core standards are visible and measurable in the curriculum delivery and the assessment tools designed. Actively lead and guide the academic program as well as the co-curricular activities program to the wider school community. Ensure faculty, students and parents are engaged and committed to Metropolitan School values (Citizenship, Entrepreneurship and Community Service). In an effort to clarify the Key accountabilities listed in the Metropolitan School Principal Job description, the following points are intended to actualize said accountabilities to the point of measurability.

High emphasis is placed on meeting of all identified deadlines.

Job Scope

Responsible for supervising academic heads of departments, teachers, student, co-curricular activities and teaching assistants, librarian and clinic.

Internal & External Interactions

School administration, faculty, students, and parents, outside agencies, teachers in other schools, accreditation representatives and officials.

Key Accountabilities

  • Embrace and encourage the ethos and standards of excellence as defined in Metropolitan School values
  • Design, supervise and ensure delivery of the required curriculum; demonstrating accurate and up to date knowledge of US Common Core standards and curriculum, assessment tools, and subject matter
  • Compile and supervise the weekly lesson planning process, ensuring it is of premium quality and relevant to the set standards, while differentiation strategies are evident and applicable. Coordinate the procurement of appropriate materials for the classroom environment to cater for different learning styles
  • Show written evidence of teachers’ planning and preparation on request. Establish and maintain records of curriculum and year plans, attendance, teaching resources, assessment plans etc.
  • Ensure the school's policies, procedures, and codes of conduct are followed at all times
  • Ensure teachers are using appropriate teaching strategies that meet student needs and abilities; including late joining students, ESL, limited academic ability, gifted and talented etc.
  • Periodically supervise the setting and marking of classwork. Assess, record and report on the academic development, progress and attainment of students and review assessment to ensure the curriculum meets the individual student’s needs and potential
  • Display competence in using media and technology in weekly faculty meetings and Professional Development sessions and parents’ and students’ meetings and assemblies
  • Promote the general progress and well-being of students, through monitoring the procedures of the school clinic and cafeterias
  • Communicate with professionals outside the school where appropriate and requested by line manager (i.e. Ministry of Education officials, accrediting entities officials)
  • Contribute to the design of the academic team appraisal system and lead and conduct performance management procedures
  • Design, plan and lead an annual professional development calendar in collaboration with the senior leadership, ensuring academic team’s professional needs are met and addressed
  • Work alongside faculty team members on the preparation and development of teaching materials, resources and courses of study, ensuring planning and resources are aligned, all necessary purchase orders are placed in a timely fashion, and all curriculum mapping is ready prior to the end of the summer leave
  • Lead the co-curricular programs of Metropolitan School, ensuring a wide range of skills are addressed to cater to the different abilities and hobbies of students. Ensure all required materials (in-house or from parents) are requested in a timely fashion, and well aligned with the content of the activities, to guarantee successful delivery and continuity of the program
  • Monitor and supervise safe and appropriate student behavior. Plan and implement strategies to encourage self-discipline and positively manage disruptive behavior
  • Model and encourage cultural awareness and understanding and promote a love of learning and inclusion
  • Communicate and meet with parents regularly promoting the school's philosophy and values; keep parents regularly informed of students’ progress while respecting the confidentiality of student-related information, ensuring all school communication is through the portal
  • Design school’s schedules in line with the number of instructional minutes required, as per the school’s accreditation and senior leadership, while ensuring proper teachers’ and students’ placement
  • Regularly update the Student handbook with all relevant policies, i.e. attendance and tardiness policies, behavior policies, birthday celebration policies, school uniform policies, gifted and talented policies
  • Integrate Junior Achievements program with the school’s curriculum, as part of Met Biz (Metropolitan School’s Entrepreneurship program), and create relevant policies and procedures to manage, facilitate and guide the teachers contribution to this program and all Met values, guaranteeing theirs and their students’ active participation and continuous engagement
  • Design the admissions entry assessments in line with the curriculum and Metropolitan School’s students’ attainment and vertical alignment strategies
  • Identify tools to accurately measure collective academic improvement data for every faculty member

Science Specific

  • Identify a mechanism to monitor parent perception of science instruction and administer at midterm and end of year. Said to be followed up by identified adjustments to both procedures and curriculum
  • Organized and thoughtful character development agenda in practice in all student activities, tied to student discipline and monitored monthly
  • Development of an ongoing school improvement plan specific to the vision, mission, and academic / social needs of Metropolitan School, said plan must be reviewed for progress / adjustment bi-monthly (initial draft by November, 1st)
  • Perform other duties as requested by direct & dotted reporting line managers / supervisors
