Seeking a Female Assistant Head of Secondary for a Private International School in Dubai! 

Primary Purpose of Job:

The Assistant Head of Secondary(Grades 6-12) Division is expected to be a leader in curriculum, pedagogy and assessment and works collaboratively with teachers in this respect. She will have a pivotal role taking responsibility for ensuring that pedagogical aspects are discussed, information is disseminated and the program is planned, taught and assessed collaboratively. The Assistant Head is a ‘lead learner’ and should inspire the cohort of the division; raising student’s outcomes is an overarching expectation and will include a focus on gifted and talented education, special education and English as a second language. The primary goal is to lead interventions designed to reduce the academic gaps of students and increase their progress as evidenced by assessment data.

Key Responsibilities: Responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following:

Instructional Leadership

  • The Assistant Head is a curriculum leader, who coordinates and monitors the review, development and implementation of curriculum for each grade level/department. Ensures that the curriculum is aligned with school goals and is in line with US Common Core State of Kansas and international developments, Ministry of Education (UAE) expectations and set objectives.
  • To maintain and promote inquiry-based practices and philosophy throughout the division.
  • To work collaboratively with Middle Leaders to develop the school’s curriculum overview and yearly curriculum maps
  • To lead the process of developing or reviewing the school’s curriculum scope and sequence documents
  • To assist teams or individuals in developing units across all subject areas
  • Ensure that planning is differentiated to meet the needs of all students (SEND/EAL)
  • In collaboration, develop and implement a Gifted and Talented program
  • Work closely with subject coordinators in the development, review and implementation of the various subject areas as well as the requirements of the DSIB
  • Prepare and submit any documentation required for various inspections and evaluations (DSIB, NEASC, CIS) in partnership with Head of Division
  • Ensure that all requirements of the US Kansas Common Core are implemented and adhered to in collaboration with the Head of Division

Assessment

  • Ensures that assessment practices are aligned with the US Common Core State of Kansas and international developments and AAM’s Assessment, Language and SEND policies
  • Ensure the implementation of assessment practices (assessment for, of, as learning)
  • Coordinates and oversees the input and analysis of assessment data as per the requirements of the Dubai Schools Inspection Bureau (DSIB)
  • Oversee Grade book (Schoology and iSams ) input and assessment expectations in collaboration with the Middle Leaders
  • Coordinates and facilitates various external assessments (e.g. MAP, IBT,CAT4) as well as internal assessments and those set by Taaleem in collaboration with the Head of Division
  • Coordination of progress and semesterised reports, proof reading, IT coordination (iSams) and distribution in collaboration with the Head of Division and Middle Leaders
  • Work with the AP Coordinator and AP teachers to continually monitor the program and ensure that students are achieving at highest possible levels.

Professional Development

  • Ensure that staff members are made aware of professional development opportunities
  • Make recommendations regarding professional development opportunities on and off campus
  • Keep a record of workshop attendance and school visits to ensure equality of opportunity to identify ongoing needs, and to complete authorization and programme evaluation form

Staff Appraisal

  • In collaboration with the Middle Leaders, the Assistant Head, coaches and mentors teachers in improving the quality of the classroom environment, instruction, and assessment and evaluation procedures
  • The Assistant Head will guide Middle Leaders in the development of subject and department action plans
  • Participate in the orientation process of new staff by introducing curriculum, assessment and teaching and learning expectations along with the Head of Division
  • Participate in the appraisal and performance Management of teaching staff, when applicable
  • Provide regular feedback for colleagues in a way which recognizes good practice and supports their progress against professional and performance management objectives resulting in a tangible impact on student learning in cooperation with Middle leaders
  • Keep abreast of the latest curriculum developments and share effectively with other members of staff

Resource Management

  • Contributes to and makes recommendations toward the budgets and the purchasing of equipment and learning resources
  • Makes recommendations to establish an inventory of resources to facilitate efficient management
  • Contributes to the use of resources and budget according to the school’s agreed financial procedures within grade level/subject departments
  • Contributes to a workable timetable/schedule in conjunction with the KHDA requirements for American Curriculum schools

School and Community Liaison and Communication

  • Contribute to the development and presentation of a coherent, understandable and accurate account of the school’s performance to a range of audiences including stakeholders, parents and outside agencies
  • The Assistant Head will offer support to the community through ongoing PD/information sessions for teachers and parents (Back to School Night, Parent-Teacher meetings, information sessions, etc.)

Pastoral

  • Oversee homeroom teachers in their role as Pastoral Leads and coordinate the Pastoral Care Program
  • Oversee the school’s behavior for learning policy and ensure effective implementation
  • Oversee and work with Middle Leaders to monitor, track and provide consequences for low-level disruptions (yellow on iSAMS)

Qualifications & Requirements

Teaching Credential/License
Bachelor
5 Years
Bachelor of Education or PGCE
  • Must be female
  • Education: Bachelor of Education or PGCE (preferably advanced degree preferable in School Management and Instructional Leadership)
  • Experience: 5 years’ teaching experience with evidence of success in leadership position
