Experience

Qualifications

  • A valid British Columbia professional teaching license is a must. Similar licenses from other Canadian provinces and international jurisdictions, such as the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, or South Africa, will be considered if the applicant commits to pursuing the BC certification.
  • If the teaching license is not from British Columbia, a four-year Bachelor’s degree is required as the starting point for the BC teacher certification.
  • Certification or training in Career Counselling.
  • Knowledge of MAIA Learning is a plus.
  • A postgraduate degree in educational leadership is a plus.
  • 100% tax free salary. Starting salary can range from CAD 61,000 - 71,000 annually.
  • Annual salary increase ranging from CAD 4,200 - 6,300 upon renewal of contract.
  • End of service benefit at the rate of 70% of one-month’s gross salary for every full year of service.
  • Furnished, air-conditioned housing.
  • Monthly transportation allowance of QR 1,000 (CAD 350 at current rate) or use of school vans for transportation.

Purpose

The Career Counselor supports students in academic success and in planning for their careers and securing admission in postsecondary institutions that meet their aspirations.

The Career Education Department Head part of this role supports the Career Counseling part.  The British Columbia Career Education curriculum comprises competencies needed for effective and purposeful career-life planning and development. It offers a gradual and consistent preparation for important decisions HUBS students will make during their high school years and beyond.

Duties

  • Support students to identify their career interests building on their aspirations and feedback from career planning tools.
  • Discuss with students career options and postsecondary institutions that match their interests, skills, academic acumen and personal circumstances.
  • Help students develop career planning and job search strategies.
  • Coach students on creating resumes and cover letters, conduct mock interviews to prepare them for college admission and job search and organize events that inform and train students on the requirements to secure admission in the college of their choice. The Career Counselor may meet with students one-to-one, in small groups and offer workshops. Events that may be organized include “Coffee with the Counselor” and workshops on:
    • Admission tests
    • Electronic application platforms used by universities and colleges
    • Career planning tools available from a variety of sources, including the British Columbia Ministry of Education
    • The BC Ministry of Education data transfer and student transcript services
    • Studying in Qatar
    • Writing Personal Statement
    • Study Skills
  • Give presentations to parents and students on the BC Graduation Program, graduation requirements, the selection of electives, careers the program prepares for and other career-related topics.
  • Update the HUBS High School Profile annually.
  • Research colleges and universities HUBS students may apply for, identify the admission requirements of programs that may be of interest, their scholarship opportunities and keep up to date on these institutions and their programs and requirements.
  • Learn how to use the electronic admission portals used by single universities or a group of institutions. Maintain a calendar of their admission deadlines to share with students and alert them as and when needed.
  • Maintain close communication with universities and colleges to convince them to participate in periodical university fairs at HUBS to connect students to these institutions. Organize visits by HUBS students to universities and colleges based in Qatar.
  • Liaise with the school administration on admission requirements to ensure the Graduation Program course structure and reporting meets these requirements.
  • Collect feedback from both students about to graduate and alumni about their experiences in getting their high school diploma endorsed for equivalency by the Qatar Ministry of Education and Higher Education. This feedback is to be relayed to the school administration to address any obstacles in achieving equivalency.
  • Keep up to date files on students receiving career guidance, meet with them to help them solve any problems they may face in their pursuit of college admission.
  • As Career Education Department Head, work with the BC Program Heads and teachers in G1-G12 to plan for and support the delivery of the British Columbia Career Education curriculum.
  • Supervise and support Career Education teachers in G8-G12.
  • Plan and coordinate the capstone project, which allows students to demonstrate the knowledge, competencies, and passion(s) that they can offer the world, as they integrate personal interests, strengths, and new learning with preferred future possibilities.
  • Teach G11-G12 Career Education subjects.
  • Assist the school Principal and the British Columbia Program Head for G8-G12 in tasks related to role responsibilities such as, but not limited to:
    • Updating Grad Calendar,
    • Creating Course Calendar,
    • Updating High School Record of Grades as needed,
    • Following up on and updating the At-Risk students list, including planning for meetings with students and parents,
    • Review/update Course registers, get approved and share with staff,
    • Review student transcripts (BC) with Graduation Requirements (G11-G12).

The Ministry thoroughly inspects our school every year. For example, inspectors look into BC program year plans, instructional time, instructional methods, admission system, the integrity of the promotion and registration process, support services, school policies, safety and supervision plans, student and staff records, teacher and principal certification, and hiring practices, learning resources, facilities and school licensing.

To graduate from our school, students will have to complete the requirements of the British Columbia graduation program in English. Graduates receive the British Columbia Certificate of Graduation (Dogwood Diploma).

Although the school offers bilingual/bi-cultural education with an Arabic Program that implements the Qatar National Curriculum, the main program is the BC program with the majority of the instructional time dedicated to this program (80% in K and 74% starting Grade 1)

The school started in 2009-2010 with KG1 - Grade 3 and has been adding a grade every year with the movement of students to higher grades. The school started to offer Grade 12 in 2018-2019. The purpose of this approach is to make the lower grades the main point of entry to the school and to keep transfers in the higher primary and intermediate grades to the minimum.

From 190 students in its first year (2009-2010), the school has grown to 1063 students in 2022-2023, with 70% of them enrolled in the BC Program, which starts at KG2.  The remaining students are registered in our Early Childhood Program (PreKG and KG1). The school’s reputation and its remarkable success are attributed to its bilingual program, the world-class BC program it implements, and the quality and dedication of the school team of teachers and administrators who make these programs a success. The students are predominantly Qataris and ESL learners. The School Early Childhood Grades (PreKG and KG1) prepare students for the BC Program. English is the main language of instruction in these grades. Their curriculum dovetails with the BC
curriculum.

HUBS Qatar is the culmination of the vision and experience of a renowned psychologist and educator in the Middle East. Parents, teachers, and BC inspectors sense the community that prevails in the school. In the year 2022-2023, the school team of educators includes 62 administrators; classroom, support, and ESL teachers. 47 are licensed educators, 20 Canadians, 12 Americans, 1 Australian, 6 South Africans, 3 British, 1 Jamaican, 1 Filipino, 1 Tunisian, and 2 Indians. The remaining 15 qualified teachers are from Canada, India, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, 1 Syrian, 1 Serbis,Tunisia, and Jordanian. 24 Arab teachers deliver the Arabic Program. The school is supported by a team of teacher assistants. Each PreKG - Grade 2 class is assigned a teaching assistant. TA time is provided to the higher elementary grades on a part-time basis.
