Deputy Director of Teaching, Learning, and Student Growth (TLSG) 

(Previously titled Academic Manager)

Overview of Position:
As AISN is a small school, the Deputy Director of Teaching, Learning, and Student Growth will serve as both a part-time teacher (teaching responsibilities assigned each year based on School’s need) and as the leader of the academic area of the school. While no direct staff supervision is responsible, the Deputy Director of TLSG will work closely with the Director and all academic staff to promote and provide outstanding academics for AISN students.

Responsibilities as Deputy Director of Teaching, Learning, and Student Growth (TLSG)

  • Oversee teachers’ implementation of curriculum and assessment at AISN
  • Work with the director and faculty to create a Teaching and Learning Handbook to  standardize practices and support teacher induction
  • Prepare report cards in partnership with Director and Technology Staff’s support
  • In partnership with the Director, create a yearly schedule
  • Keep website updated
  • Provide career and college counseling to junior and seniors including meeting with  students and parents
  • Coordinate PSAT, SAT, and AP testing
  • Coordinates student enrolment in the correct classes for Courseware, Calvert, and ExactPath (Edmentum).
  • Supports teachers’ implementation of the AISN Curriculum and ExactPath.
  • Create weekly newsletter
  • Coordinate school-wide activities and events with all educational staff
  • Serve as MAP coordinator doing the administrative work as well as providing professional development for staff on MAP testing and use of results In coordination with the Director, plan professional development activities for all educational staff
  • Create staff duty schedule
  • Present updates on previously held and future student events to the Board of Directors
  • Sit on educational committees
  • Serve as a coordinator on the MSA accreditation process and lead accreditation goals and targets
  • Transcript verification, credit checks, and transcript preparation

Responsibilities as Teacher

  • Implement teaching strategies that are aligned with the school’s Curriculum, Mission, Vision, Beliefs, and Profile of Graduates Plans and organizes learning experiences by developing following curriculum maps  for the school year, unit plans, weekly and daily lesson plans
  • Address the diverse student needs through differentiation of instruction
  • Prepare assignments, experiments, demonstrations, and teaching aids
  • Maintain effective classroom management practices and creates an environment of mutual respect, rapport, and fairness
  • Evaluate and maintain students’ records of achievement
  • Use assessments and student performance data as a guide for decision-making
  • Works cooperatively with colleagues
  • Helps students with study skills and time management
  • Collaborates to integrate lessons with specialists whenever possible
  • Maintains positive communication with parents and community
  • Participates and/or sponsors after-school activities
  • Attends staff meetings and group meetings as required
  • Coordinates school-wide assemblies in turn with other faculty members
  • Chairs committees for AISN school events such as Fall Fest, Winter Fest, International Day, etc. in turns with other faculty members
  • Participates in curriculum development and accreditation studies
  • Completes other assignments that may include duties designated as needed by the Director

Established in 1978, the American International School of Nouakchott has a rich history of providing education to students from across the globe. With an established curriculum, based on U.S. AERO Standards (www.projectaero.com), students at AISN learn key concepts and develop well-rounded skills in English, math, social studies, science, French, art, music, PE, and robotics.

AISN prides itself on offering an MSA-accredited American education program for students from PreK - 12, and is the only school in Mauritania to offer American high school diplomas.

The school has a close relationship with the US Embassy and uses the attached former US Embassy’s swimming pool, basketball court, volleyball court, and walking/running/bike path daily during PE, recess, and after-school activities.

Our enrollment is approximately 90 students from 32 different countries. Classes are taught in English, often with combined grades, the average class size is 9 students with the largest class of 13.  Classes are capped at 15.

Classrooms are well equipped and the school has high-speed reliable fiber optic internet. MS/HS students are required to bring laptops every day.

AISN has 15 teachers, from 8 different countries. The largest percentage of teachers are American and almost all our full-time teachers have a US teaching license. We pride ourselves on our commitment to the ongoing education and development of our staff. We have a substantial professional development budget annually which is used for group and individual training needs.
