Elementary School Counselor (ES)

Mission Statement: The Khartoum American School provides an outstanding learning environment to promote an open, inclusive, and student-centered program. We are devoted to fostering educational growth and development for our internationally diverse student body.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • To establish a proactive counseling program using the ASCA model  (American School Counselor Association) that supports student academic and social adjustment.
  • When appropriate, provide workshops and information sessions to parents, students, and teachers related to child development, family growth, and development.
  • To assist the elementary principal in developing class schedules.
  • To collect follow-up adjustment information about students transitioning from the ES to the KAS Secondary School.
  • To provide social, emotional, and academic adjustment counseling to students as needed and to refer parents to outside helping specialists when appropriate.
  • To be a member of the KAS Student Services Support Team, and to attend and participate in students of concern meetings at the appropriate division.
  • To contribute information to the KAS E-News newsletter periodically and when requested by the Elementary Principal (i.e., guidance and counseling information).
  • To consult with teachers and/or parents and/or the Elementary Principal to address their concerns about students.
  • To assist in developing a “New Student/Departing Student” transition program that involves students, parents, and teachers
  • To follow the KAS policies and procedures regarding new student admissions.
  • To monitor students’ progress through classroom visitation and check-in meetings with students when needed or requested by the Elementary Principal.
  • To assist the elementary principal in the coordination and implementation of character education or similar program at the division.
  • To assist the Elementary Principal in the development of an advisory system when requested.
  • To establish and maintain a database of the outside-of-school community service resources for addressing student and family counseling requirements when needed.
  • To maintain a list of possible academic tutors to be given to parents and students if required.
  • To maintain confidentiality in all matters about students’ counseling issues.
  • To participate actively in admissions decisions when requested.
  • To assist in the registering of students for standardized tests such as the MAP test
  • To plan the divisional honors program and assist in graduation ceremonies. To attend faculty meetings and professional development workshops. 
  • To be available to the school’s Emergency Response Team when requested

The Khartoum American School (KAS) is an independent, coeducational day school that offers an educational program from preschool (3 year-olds) through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. The school was founded in 1957.

KAS provides nurturing and caring student-centered environment. The curriculum is inquiry-based and international (AERO) in scope. The language of instruction is English and resources are from the U.S. The school’s core curriculum includes language arts (English), math, science, social studies, and foreign language (French or Arabic). Classes in music, art, and physical education supplement the core curriculum.
