The Head of Mathematics at HD Ningbo School will work closely with the Senior Leadership Team in providing a high quality of Mathematics Teaching & Learning at the School. This vital Department includes a number of first-class Chinese teachers of Mathematics who in turn benefit from the guidance of a Chinese Master teacher in those areas in the lower secondary school where Mathematics is taught largely in Chinese. However, we are now in need of a leader with a strong command of international syllabuses to help shape and lead the teaching of the subject in the senior years, where teaching of the subject moves into English and a team of international and bilingual Chinese teachers currently work together to prepare the students for the Cambridge A level examinations. The Head of Department should be able to command the confidence of a highly able pupil and teaching body across the Mathematics and Further Mathematics syllabuses.

We are seeking an individual who can articulate and develop the vision and ethos of HD Ningbo, helping to inspire and empower staff, students and parents within the whole community of the School.

Role and Responsibilities

Teaching and Learning

  • To foster a passion for Mathematics, an excellent work ethic, and a culture of high expectations in which both staff and students fulfil their potential
  • To oversee curriculum development, lesson planning and schemes of work for the Mathematics Department
  • To monitor and evaluate curriculum provision, liaising with other Heads of Department, where appropriate, to implement action plans
  • To ensure a personalised approach to learning is adopted and a variety of learning models and groupings are used by Mathematics teachers
  • To liaise with the Learning Support Department regarding the development and collation of Individual Education Plans
  • To have a thorough understanding of the purpose and aims of the HD Ningbo’s overall curriculum, and ensure this is communicated effectively
  • To ensure that Mathematics Teaching & Learning are appropriately aligned with the School’s value added measures
  • To develop the best combination of British and Chinese approaches to deliver a personalised bi-lingual curriculum
  • To ensure that technology is used effectively to support learning
  • To ensure a consistent and high quality approach to assessment and reporting of Mathematics throughout the School
  • To create and update curriculum handbooks and policy documents
  • To participate fully in the co-curricular and school activity programme

  • To be an outstanding practitioner as a Mathematics teacher, setting the standards for other teachers in the Department when teaching
  • To create an effective, challenging learning environment for all
  • To provide appropriate and timely feedback on work

  • To lead and participate in school activities outside the classroom, helping to deliver a broad co-curriculum and build a strong sense of school community

Communication and Co-operation

  • To develop a collaborative and supportive culture amongst colleagues in the Mathematics Department in which information, ideas and resources are easily shared
  • To ensure that Mathematics classrooms are an attractive orderly place where equipment and resources are well managed
  • To identify opportunities for staff CPD and to ensure that a strong professional development framework is in place
  • To assist the Senior Leadership Team in developing the strategic vision for the School
  • To participate in leadership, department and parent meetings
  • To support the School’s image and profile in the community
  • To attend meetings and undertake duties as reasonably requested by the Head

Qualifications & Requirements

Teaching Credential/License
  • Excellent working knowledge of the UK National Curriculum (required)
  • High levels of subject knowledge (required)
  • At least five years of relevant teaching experience (desirable)
  • Experience of working with children who have English as a Second Language (desirable)
  • Experience of working in the independent sector (desirable)


  • A good degree from an established university
  • PGCE or QTS
