  • Sensitivity towards, and familiar with, a diverse range of student learning needs
  • Experience of working in a multicultural environment and awareness of cross-cultural issues and understanding

Kampala Community International School is a relatively young school with a strong focus on active, hands on learning. We are looking for a Headteacher to lead the school and our fantastic teaching team as we 'Inspire Every Child To Love Learning' without compromising on our school values, curriculum content, extra curricular activities or academic standards. The role will include teacher training and mentoring, as well as curriculum mapping and development. 

Strategic Purpose

The post holder shall be responsible for the learning, development and operations of the school. In particular s/he shall advise on and implement rigorous academic practises and policies to ensure that students receive the highest standard of education in line with the school vision, values and motto. 

Core Responsibilities

  • Leading the day to day management of KCIPrimary School (years 1-6) within the spirit of the school's mission and values
  • Ensuring the highest possible standards of education through the promotion of effective teaching and learning, a balanced curriculum, the provision of excellent pastoral care and support for students and a rich extra-curricular programme
  • Leading, managing and developing staff (ensuring that effective responsibility is delegated where applicable through an appropriate management structure) to ensure that the school’s organisation, curriculum, and resources enable both teachers and students to achieve the highest possible standards
  • Implementing an educational standards policy including excellent assessment practices to maintain a high calibre of teaching and learning within the school
  • Keeping abreast of changes in government policy and wider educational practices and ensure that the school complies with educational and other relevant legislation, including health and safety
  • Being accountable for the effectiveness, efficiency and quality outcomes of all aspects of the school, including financial and human resources, pupil behaviour and discipline, and educational and support services
  • Leading the shaping of the school’s future and ensure that everyone is enabled to contribute effectively to the progress and development of the school
  • Leading the development of the school curriculum alongside our school values, especially that of active learning, and support all teaching staff in planning and incorporation of active learning
  • Providing all teachers in the school with a strong professional development programme
  • Undertaking professional appraisal of all teaching colleagues, following the agreed school-wide policy developed by the Head of School
  • Supporting teaching colleagues in their different roles and undertaking disciplinary measures where appropriate
  • Advising the School Directors on staffing, budgetary and facilities needs as well as managing and maximising the allocated budget, facilities, materials and resources
  • Work with the School Directors to attract, recruit and retain a high quality, committed teaching team
  • Supporting the Directors where necessary in welcoming and providing school tours as well as interviewing all new families as per the school admissions policy
  • Maintaining a friendly, open, supportive but firm relationship with parents and their representatives
  • Ensuring the school has a policy appropriate to the school’s capacity to  support students who have individual educational needs and ensuring the policy is implemented throughout the school
  • Meeting with other Heads on a regular basis, consulting with them on matters of local security and practises, as well as sharing best educational practises, organising inter-school events for students to participate in and training for teachers
  • Providing a process of reporting regularly to parents on student academic and social development and ensuring all parents are aware of the school's procedures for following up their concerns
  • Maintaining and promoting the school library by supporting the library administrator to carry out activities
  • Facilitating the school PCC (Parent Community Council) meetings, advising and consulting with them on school and wider school community matters
  • Be responsible for promoting the aims and values of the school and ensure effective communications with all stakeholders, including governors, staff, pupils, and parents, the community served by the school, the local authority and relevant government agencies
  • Provide Board members with regular reports on school developments and activities and consult with the governing body wherever appropriate, for example in the formulation of development plans
  • Ensuring that child protection and safeguarding of both students and teachers, as well as student and teacher welfare are given high priority at all times
  • Ensuring strategies are in place for maximum student retention and work with the Directors to attract and enrol high levels of high calibre students
  • Supporting the busy and varied life of the school, attending its events and wider programme of activities
