Job Description

Job Overview:  
The Math Teacher is responsible for delivering high-quality mathematics instruction to students. This role involves teaching various mathematical concepts and problem-solving strategies, helping students to build a strong foundation in math. The teacher should foster a positive and engaging learning environment, helping students understand the relevance and application of mathematics in real-life situations.  

 

Key Responsibilities:  

  1. Teaching and Lesson Planning:  
  • Plan and deliver lessons aligned with IB MYP/DP frameworks, emphasizing conceptual understanding, global contexts, and inquiry-based learning. 
  • Develop and deliver lessons on mathematical concepts such as algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and number theory, according to the curriculum and academic standards.  
  • Integrate ATL skills (thinking, research, communication, self-management, and social skills) into learning experiences. 
  • Plan lessons that provide opportunities for students to connect mathematical concepts to DP CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) and MYP Service Action projects fostering real-world application and interdisciplinary learning. 
  • Ensure lessons are tailored to meet the diverse learning needs of students, utilizing differentiated teaching strategies.  
  • Plan engaging, interactive, and challenging lessons that promote critical thinking and problem-solving.  
  • Use technology and digital tools to enhance instruction, offering varied learning experiences.  


  1. Assessment and Student Progress:  
  • Design and implement assessments consistent with MYP criteria-based and DP criterion-referenced frameworks. 
  • Provide ongoing formative and summative assessments that guide learning and inform teaching. 
  • Regularly assess students’ understanding through assignments, quizzes, tests, and in-class activities.  
  • Collaborate in developing common assessments and standardization processes within the department to ensure fairness and consistency. 
  • Track and document student progress, providing timely feedback and guidance to support improvement.  
  • Use assessment data to identify students' strengths and areas for improvement, offering tailored support to ensure progress.  
  • Provide opportunities for formative and summative assessments, ensuring that students have a variety of ways to demonstrate their understanding.  


  1. Classroom Management:  
  • Establish clear rules and expectations for student behavior and academic performance.  
  • Maintain a respectful and organized classroom environment that encourages active participation and focus.  
  • Use positive reinforcement to motivate students and encourage a growth mindset in mathematics.  
  • Address any classroom disruptions promptly and fairly to ensure a positive learning experience for all students.  


  1. Mathematics Enrichment:  
  • Encourage students to explore mathematical concepts outside the classroom through independent work, projects, and research.  
  • Organize or participate in math-related extracurricular activities, such as math clubs, competitions, or math fairs.  
  • Support students in preparing for standardized math tests or competitions, providing additional resources and guidance when needed.  
  • Support the development of Internal Assessments (DP) and personalized inquiry projects (MYP) by guiding students through the process of exploration, reflection, and communication. 


  1. Curriculum Development:  
  • Collaborate with the Math Department to develop and update the math curriculum to reflect MYP and DP standards. 
  • Participate in the creation and refinement of unit plans, assessments, and internal standardization activities. 
  • Integrate interdisciplinary links and global contexts in lessons to foster a holistic understanding of mathematical concepts. 
  • Support students in making connections between mathematics and other subjects, encouraging interdisciplinary learning. 
  • Modify and adapt lessons to meet the needs of students with different learning styles, including students with special educational needs (SEN).  
  • Ensure that lessons align with national or international math education standards and contribute to students' overall academic development.  


  1. Extracurricular Activities:  
  • Lead or support extracurricular activities related to math, such as math clubs, math competitions, or field trips to math-related events.  
  • Encourage students to participate in math contests, challenges, or Olympiads to broaden their interest and application of mathematics.  
  • Assist in organizing school-wide events such as math fairs or inter-school math competitions.  
  • Serve as IB MYP Personal Project and IB DP Extended Essay Supervisor as requested. 
  • Serve as IB MYP Service Action or IB DP CAS Advisor as assigned.  


  1. Student Engagement and Motivation:  
  • Foster a positive, encouraging classroom environment where students feel confident in tackling mathematical problems.  
  • Provide clear explanations and examples to help students understand complex mathematical concepts.  
  • Encourage students to ask questions, explore different approaches to problems, and think critically about mathematical ideas.  
  • Use real-world examples and applications of mathematics to demonstrate its relevance to students’ everyday lives.  
  • Promote the IB Learner Profile attributes, helping students become inquirers, thinkers, and reflective learners. 


  1. Professional Development:  
  • Participate in ongoing professional development opportunities, including workshops, seminars, and conferences, to stay updated with best practices in IB MYP/DP mathematics education.  
  • Reflect on teaching practices and adjust methods to improve student outcomes and engagement.  
  • Collaborate with colleagues to share teaching strategies, resources, and ideas for improving mathematics instruction.  


  1. Parent and Community Communication:  
  • Regularly communicate with parents about students’ progress, achievements, and areas needing improvement.  
  • Participate in parent-teacher conferences, providing insights into students’ mathematical development and offering suggestions for support at home.  
  • Foster strong relationships with parents and the broader school community to support students’ success.  

 

Qualifications and Skills:  

  • Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, Math Education, or a related field.  
  • Teaching certification or qualification (if required by local regulations).  
  • Proven experience teaching mathematics at the relevant educational level (primary, secondary, or higher education).  
  • Strong knowledge of mathematical concepts, theories, and applications.  
  • Preferably, experience teaching Mathematics within the IB MYP and/or DP frameworks. 
  • Deep understanding of concept-based, inquiry-driven pedagogy and criterion-related assessment. 
  • Ability to engage students through interactive lessons and practical problem-solving activities.  
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.  
  • Proficiency in using educational technology and digital resources for teaching.  
  • Knowledge of mathematical tools and software (e.g., graphing calculators, mathematical modeling software) is a plus.  
  • Strong classroom management skills and ability to foster a positive learning environment.
