Remuneration: Salary + 15%

Counselors earn the standard teacher salary plus 15%. The additional 15% remuneration recognizes the level of responsibility associated with this position, including the expectation of availability to address issues outside of regular working hours and contracted school days. This is above and beyond the expected 15 work days on campus beyond student contact days.
 

Scope of Work:

The Middle School Counselor serves the emotional and developmental needs of students in 6th, 7th and 8th grades, through one-on-one and small-group counselling, collaboration with classroom teachers and the grade level team, and provision of developmental instruction at appropriate levels. The counselor is also a critical member of the middle school leadership team, providing support to the Principal, Assistant Principal, and working closely with team leaders. In particular, the counselor collaborates with team leaders and supports the advisory program curriculum.

Additionally, the counselor will be expected to participate in a variety of collaborative teams and committees, fulfil supervision duties as assigned, including some evening and weekend events, and contribute to the co-curricular program.


Specific Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and collaboratively plan learning experiences for the middle school advisory program, including social-emotional lessons
  • Collaborate with the Student Support Team in identifying and addressing the needs of exceptional students: academic, emotional and social considerations
  • Providing support to students identified as having academic challenges or emotional/social issues
  • Consult with parents and staff on student-related concerns
  • Lead Parent Tea presentations on topics relevant to the Middle School, such as how parents can support their children at home, etc
  • Act as a member of the Middle School admissions team
  • Oversee the Student Ambassadors program, which conducts campus tours, supports new student orientations, and generally provides leadership and service to our ISK community
  • Provide a transition-in and transition-out program for new and departing students, including new student orientation and transition lunches
  • Work with the Safety and Security Committee to provide crisis support services, including Child Protection
  • Promote a positive climate among students, staff, and community (attend extracurricular activities, be highly visible at break times, etc.)
  • Maintain a current mental health resource referral list
  • Participate as a chaperone on a week-long intercultural trip
  • Collaborate with colleagues in bringing the ISK Educational Aims to life
  • Meet regularly with the Middle School Principal and Assistant Principal for updating and planning
