Additional Preferred Qualifications:

  • Salary (2750-3000 USD/mo) 12 months plus bonuses for Christmas, Chinese New Year, and Summer
  • Housing (750 USD/mo) - paid with salary every 15th, as well as temporary housing on campus upon arrival and housing allowance advance 
  • Roundtrip Airfare (up to approx. 1600 USD/yr)
  • Government Subsidy (approx. 800-1200 USD/mo*)
  • Participation in pension plan (5% matched contribution), disbursed in full at end of contract

*Teacher subsidy, free public healthcare, and free PD are provided directly by the government of Macau SAR, not the school, after successful teacher certification.  All teachers will be pre-approved for certification but must complete the certification process in Macau.  

Seeking Primary Homeroom/English/General Studies Teachers (Grades 1, 3, 4) 

Colégio Diocesano de São Jose 5, is a K-12 Chinese Catholic School in Macau. Our long-standing Chinese medium program extends from K-12, while our bilingual English-Chinese program, until recently, was only available in the secondary level.  In 2016/2017, we opened a new Primary English Section, a bilingual Grade 1-6 program starting with two founding Grade 1 classes in which English is the medium of instruction for English, General Studies (Science, Social Studies), Math, Civics, Music, and Art. This program is growing year by year as new classes are added. For the 2018/2019, we will have 7 homerooms with 3 vacancies for Homeroom/English/General Studies Teachers (Grade 1, 3, 4) who also provide English language support to specialist teachers in their students' Art and Music lessons.  

Homeroom duties

  • Classroom decoration and creation of didactic materials such as class anchor charts, classroom management systems, etc. preparing class lists and seating charts, managing arrival and dismissal, etc with support of a local co-teacher
  • Plan and execute activities for the daily 20 min HR period and extended homeroom on Mondays and Fridays
  • Plan class activities and accompany the class during holiday celebrations, school activities, assemblies, mass, etc. 
  • Cooperate with local co-teacher for student behavior management, communication with parents and special services, etc. 
  • Grading conduct weekly and quarterly, assessing overall oral English development and providing comments on quarterly report cards with support of a local co-teacher
  • Guide students' character development especially during homeroom periods

Teaching duties

  • Teach 7 lessons per week of English as a Second Language and English language using Longman English World series, THRASS phonics system, story books and other supplementary materials with the support of a local co-teacher. Submit yearly teaching plans, collecting and correcting homework, tests, and exams. Complete formative and running record assessments of literacy, oral English, and phonics.
  • Teach 6 lessons per week of General Studies (Social Studies, Science, Health, etc.) using Longman Explore series and supplementary materials with the support of a local co-teacher
  • Provide English language support to local specialist teachers in Art and Music (5 lessons per week)
  • Advise one extracurricular activity per week during school hours with a local co-teacher (Friday last two lessons)
  • Cooperate effectively with local co-teachers in the design and execution of lesson activities and coordinate with other teachers teaching the same grade level and subjects 

Non-teaching duties

  • Share other general tasks such as hall monitoring during breaks, 1-2 times weekly morning duty (7:45-8:00) and 1-2 times weekly lunch recess duty (1:30-2pm), exam proctoring, etc. Voluntary paid lunch duty and remedial class
  • Participation in school activities and events including parents meetings, open days, school celebrations etc, that may occur outside working hours (evenings or Saturdays) 
  • Maintain a high professional standard with respect for local culture and Catholic values and adherence to school policies including attendance policy and dress code
  • Typical working hours: 8:00-12:15, 2:00-4:45pm, Monday-Friday
  • Teaching year: late August through mid/late July

St. Joseph's Diocesan School is a co-educational Chinese Catholic school in the rapidly developing city of Macau, a "Special Administrative Region" of China (same status to Hong Kong). Our Chinese section is a grade K-12 Chinese (Cantonese) medium program following a typical Macau curriculum including English as a core subject.
