Reporting to the Director of the University Counseling Office, the Senior Counselor is responsible for supporting and assisting students with college planning and applications in 11th (2nd semester) and 12th grade. The Senior Counselor is to collaborate with parents, advisors, teachers, Guidance Counselors, and other stakeholders to support students and help them optimize their potential for success in reaching their ideal post-secondary goals.

Responsibilities Toward Students:

  • Provide academic, career, college admission and procedural information to students through the College Planning 10 Course and Application Support 12 Course
  • Guide students in understanding and utilizing Naviance, CommonApp, Coalition, UCAS, University of California, and other relevant application management systems
  • Meet one-on-one with students regularly to explore and identify appropriate college application strategies and goals
  • Provide one-on-one college counseling to a caseload of seniors through the admissions cycle including, but not limited to, creating a college list, writing and revising personal statements and essays, advising on financial aid, and making final matriculation decisions
  • Synthesize the strengths and needs of each student in order to help students frame themes and highlight for their college applications
  • Provide assistance and recommendation for students’ exploration and participation in extracurricular activities that can support a strong presentation self-identity in the students’ application
  • Enforce students’ participation during college visits to enable students to learn from a range of colleges
  • Monitor students’ overall college application progress by updating students’ application status, admissions results, and standardized testing scores on Naviance
  • Organize and promote student and parent education so that they understand the current realities in college admissions and are empowered to navigate the college process, identify options, and maintain a healthy balance and perspective
  • Assist assigned students in developing an appropriate and balanced list of colleges to explore
  • Write individualized and detailed letters of recommendations for each assigned student
  • Maintain student files, ensure timely submission of supporting information and materials to colleges and collect data pertinent to the process (i.e., testing data, parent surveys, etc.)
  • Assist students in identifying resources for scholarships and financial aid, understand financial aid packages, and refer students to other resources as necessary

Responsibilities Toward Parents:

  • Educate families about career paths, college admission process and requirements, financial aid or scholarship possibilities through parent conferences and workshops
  • Work with parents answering questions, explaining the process, providing resources related to their students’ college application process
  • Encourage and communicate college visits to relevant parents
  • Communicate periodic updates on the students’ college planning and application progress

Responsibilities Toward College Representatives:

  • Build and maintain relationships with admission professionals
  • Advocate for students by answering any questions about students or provide background insights to assist the review of students’ applications
  • Advocate for the school by explaining highlights of the VMA curriculum, vision, and school culture

Responsibilities Toward Teachers:

  • Maintain communication with teachers to keep abreast of students’ academic progress
  • Assist teachers in writing and submitting recommendation letters for students
  • Educate teachers on general academic and college planning information to integrate college-related skills (i.e., essay writing, interviewing, etc.) into regular curricula

 Professional Development Responsibilities:  

  • Understand the college admission process at a variety of institution types and selectivity levels
  • Maintain a strong working knowledge of colleges and universities, which includes making regular visits to colleges, attending college visits at VMA, and keeping abreast of current higher education trends through professional associations
  • Pursue appropriate professional development, including attendance at annual conference(s) in the counseling and admission professional organizations.
  • Participate internal professional development training, coaching, and/or mentorships as organized by the Director of University Counseling Office
  • Seek to develop a deep understanding of cultural and global values and practices that may contribute to better guidance of students on their journey of self-understanding

  • Diploma from a competitive university/college preferred
  • Attendance of a university away from one's hometown preferred
  • At least 3 years of experience with college counseling/college admissions
