Job Purpose:
To plan and deliver personalised, high-quality teaching and learning experiences for pupils with special educational needs (SEND), supporting their academic, emotional, and social development. The SEN Teacher will work collaboratively with other staff and external professionals to help each pupil reach their full potential in a safe, nurturing environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Teaching and Learning
- Plan and deliver differentiated lessons that meet the individual learning needs, abilities, and EHCP (Education, Health and Care Plan) targets of pupils.
- Adapt the curriculum to ensure accessibility and relevance to pupils with a range of needs, including autism, moderate learning difficulties (MLD), severe learning difficulties (SLD), speech and language needs, physical disabilities, or social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) challenges.
- Use a range of teaching methods, strategies, and assistive technologies to promote engagement and independence.
- Foster a positive and inclusive classroom environment where all pupils feel valued and supported.
- Assessment and Progress Monitoring
- Set appropriate learning goals and monitor pupil progress using a variety of formative and summative assessment methods.
- Maintain detailed records of pupil achievement, behaviour, and individual support strategies.
- Contribute to the development and review of EHCPs and Individual Education Plans (IEPs).
- Provide regular feedback to parents, carers, and the wider multi-agency team.
- Pastoral Support and Behaviour Management
- Promote pupils’ emotional well-being, self-esteem, and confidence.
- Apply effective strategies for managing behaviour, using positive reinforcement and tailored support plans.
- Work closely with teaching assistants, therapists, and support staff to provide consistent support across the school day.
- Support pupils in developing life skills, communication, and social interaction.
Professional Responsibilities
- Participate in staff training and CPD related to SEND, safeguarding, and curriculum development.
- Collaborate with colleagues, external specialists, and families to provide holistic support.
- Contribute to school improvement plans and whole-school activities, such as assemblies, outings, and enrichment opportunities.
- Uphold the school’s safeguarding, inclusion, and equality policies.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent (essential).
- Experience working with pupils with special educational needs (essential).
- Additional training or qualifications in SEN (desirable).
- Knowledge of strategies for supporting learners with autism, ADHD, learning difficulties, or behavioural needs.
