The concept of napping in schools has emerged recently as a potential solution to address various challenges faced by both students and teachers. From enhancing focus and productivity to reducing burnout, the benefits of incorporating napping spaces in educational institutions are becoming increasingly evident.

On this episode of our podcast for educators School of Talk, our host and education expert Ryan Stevenson, sits down with Kate Mulligan, a napping activist, diversity advocate, and innovator, and founder of RestSpace.

Featured in BBC World Service and Yahoo News, she is the founder of Rest Space — a group that dares to revolutionize the future of workplace wellbeing through rest. Ryan and Kate discuss why and how classroom napping spaces benefit our overall wellness.

Today we ask, Could we see napping spaces in schools of the future?

Studies Show the Science Behind Power Naps, Particularly the Cognitive and Physical Benefits

Napping, once stigmatized as a sign of laziness, is gaining recognition for its potential health benefits. Scientific research highlights the advantages of brief daytime naps, debunking misconceptions and emphasizing their role in enhancing alertness and performance.

This study by the SRM Institute of Science and Technology explored the optimal timing, duration, and frequency of naps to maximize their positive effects on physical and mental well-being.

Short naps, ranging from five to fifteen minutes, have been shown to boost mood, memory, alertness, and response time, particularly during the post-lunch dip period from 1-4 pm.

Additionally, regular napping has long-term benefits, including improved cardiovascular health and brain function. While cultures like Spain, Greece, and India have embraced midday siestas, integrating power naps into daily routines can enhance creativity and productivity in the workplace.

However, it’s essential to recognize that naps should complement, not replace, nocturnal sleep, and timing and duration are critical to avoid disrupting nighttime rest.

Ultimately, incorporating short, restorative naps into daily life can optimize functioning and harness the body’s natural ability to regenerate neurons, promoting overall health and productivity.

It only makes sense that napping in schools improves student focus and productivity.

“There’s a direct correlation between academic performance and the rest you get,” Mulligan says.

Acknowledging the individual needs of students and providing dedicated spaces for napping can create an environment conducive to learning and overall health.

Napping in schools is not just a trend but a strategic approach to promoting student well-being and academic success.

What Role Do Napping Spaces Play in Reducing Teacher Burnout?

Napping can significantly benefit focus, memory retention, and overall cognitive function.

One innovative solution gaining traction? Napping pods!

These pods are becoming increasingly popular in school settings. They offer privacy, darkness, and noise reduction, addressing common concerns such as embarrassment and interruption.

“Having a space where it’s quiet, where it’s dark, where it’s comfortable, where it’s safe, is essential,” asserts Mulligan.

With napping pods, students and teachers alike can comfortably rejuvenate their minds and bodies, leading to improved performance and morale.

By integrating napping into the school day, educators can empower students to reach their full potential academically and beyond.

Napping Spaces for Teachers

Teachers stand to benefit from napping spaces, particularly in combating burnout and improving job satisfaction.

“Having more sleep and having naps, both of those can help improve the way that you deal with the day-to-day stresses,” says Mulligan.

Providing teachers with opportunities for rest can enhance their effectiveness in the classroom and promote retention within the profession.

“If we don’t change, we can’t expect a different result.”
