Director of Curriculum & Instruction (K-12)

The Director of Curriculum & Instruction is responsible for the smooth educational management of the school (k-12), with some teaching commitment and for the equality of educational delivery. He/she is expected to liaise closely with the senior management and Principal to manage the academic programme. This role will depend to a certain extent on the individual strengths of the successful candidate, however, the main duties are as follows:  

 

The curriculum and academic life of the School: 

  • To take overall responsibility for all aspects of teaching and learning within the school
  • To be responsible for the school’s schedule and academic calendar  
  • To be responsible to improve all benchmark assessments including but not limited to Measures of Academic Progress (MAP)
  • To manage the development and implementation of curriculum benchmark assessment policies, regulations, procedures, and practices
  • Assists in the administration of instructional and operational programs of the school
  • To develop and implement the educational philosophy of the school and to promote a culture of best practice
  • To advise the Principal on all academic matters
  • To oversee the creation and maintenance of all academic policies and to update accompanying handbooks and the staff handbook, where they relate to the curriculum
  • To manage the school’s curriculum plan
  • To keep the Principal, and all staff, abreast of developments in education; to promote individual departmental initiatives where appropriate
  • To oversee arrangements for external accreditation

 

Staff management and school life: 

  • To serve as site administrator in the absence of the principal and/or assistant principal. Act for the principal and/or assistant principal in his/her absence, within the framework of school rules, administrative regulations and School Board policy
  • To lead and manage various homeroom teachers, grades coordinators and various academic staff, to encourage, support and challenge them to maintain and raise the already high academic standards in all subject areas
  • To assist in evaluation and improvement of instructional skills through monitoring and conducting teacher observation and feedback sessions regarding performance.
  • To assist in the organization and planning of instruction, selection of materials and implementation of programs
  • To monitor constantly staff performance and to be the first port of call for any teacher in need of advice or support
  • To assists in establishment of programs and strategies to ensure compliance with Standards of Student Conduct
  • To assist in establishing and maintaining discipline throughout the student body
  • To chair all curriculum planning and staff meetings
  • To assist the Principal with the school’s staff appraisal system
  • To arrange and oversee all staff academic professional development
  • To oversee the allocation of staff in consultation with the Principal
  • To assist the Principal with interviewing applicants for teaching posts and to advise on the appointment of staff
  • This is not intended as an exhaustive list of duties. Other duties as may be reasonable required will form part of the job description. 

 

Working hours are approximately as follows:

  • 5 classes maximum per day/ 10 classes per week 
  • 40 work hours week (Teaching and office hours 7:30am to 5:00pm) 

 

Contract duration: Starting from two year minimum, and more desirable if you have plans to consider settling in China for three or more years. Prospects of professional development and promotions available within the school for candidates considering long-term development.

Qualifications and Requirements

Additional School Requirements
  • American, British, Canadian or Australian would be considered more desirable 
  • Teaching and educational leadership experiences outside of home country or in China preferred 
  • At least five years of recent successful experience as an educational leader, an administrator and/or supervisor in curriculum, instruction or vocational education
  • Experience with CCSS/American curriculum within American and/or International schools
  • Strong people skills and team building skills 
  • Teaching and administration experience in a multi-cultural environment
  • The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with local Chinese working partners, international working partners, parents, school staff and administrators, diverse groups in schools, community and business partners
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, teachers, parents, administrators and the general public
  • Considerable knowledge of management techniques, broad knowledge of the principles and practices of school administration, and current trends in curriculum, instruction and assessment
  • Successful leadership experience directing academic programs
  • Showing commitment and self-initiation towards continual professional development as a leadership
  • Having keenness or holding open-mindedness to Asian/Chinese culture and customs in the workplace
  • Further desirable if applicant could show us with a cultivated background to model professional code of conduct as a leader (e.g. professional dress code, strong presentation skills, punctuality and team playing skills)
