Elementary Teacher
Job Description:
- 20 contact hours per week/2 sections with an average of 15 to 18 students in each class/section
- Students are grouped in two sections using a variety of screening standards, including social interaction, gender balance, past performance and MAP averages
A typical day for Elementary faculty at ASD:
The Morning Group:
The day for teachers will begin at 7:30am, with student arriving to school between 7:40 and 7:50am. Morning section classes commence at 8am and continue until 10:15am. Content includes Language Arts, Science, and Math.
Language Arts is covered on a daily basis, while Math and Science are covered two to three times per week.
Lunch: (10:15 to 11:00)
During the lunch break, the teacher may also get a break and use this time to prepare afternoon lessons, or may choose to meet with students during their recess time to tutor them through difficult concepts. Every other week, teachers are asked to perform monitoring duties during lunch. All teachers and students go to the cafeteria together, so such duties are easily managed because many are present to help. After eating, duty teachers are asked to monitor students during their playtime, on the sports fields or in the play area.
The Afternoon Group:
A typical afternoon section will begin at 11:00am until 2:30pm. The afternoon schedule is longer because Art, PE, Dance, and Technology classes are also scheduled at this time, and taught by other faculty. Faculty responsible for core content have breaks during these periods. Like the morning section, content again includes Language Arts, Science, and Math, but may be taught at a slightly higher or lower level depending on the proficiency and productivity of the group.
Dismissal is at 2:30: Faculty attend students from their class until 2:50 and then return to their classrooms or planned meetings until 3:30. In those instances when faculty do not have meetings, and are already well planned for the next day, faculty may leave at 3:10.
Support for Teachers:
ASD has a separate Science Lab Coordinator to run science labs, as planned and scheduled by the teacher and lab coordinator. Typically, core content faculty “assist” during the lab period, but are not responsible for preparing the lab or materials.
ASD has a support team to help at risk students in the areas of English, Math, and Spanish. Support program teachers help both in the classroom and through a series of planned pull-out sessions.
Duties: include observation of recess, play areas, lunch period, and dismissal time. These are scheduled bi-weekly.
Materials/Programs in Use: Science-Text-Shake Up Science; English-On Our Way to English; Learning A to Z; Achieve 3000 & Prime Math.
External Exams: MAP- Language Usage; Reading; and Math
