English Language Teacher - Hanoi

Goals of the English Program

At Horizon International Bilingual School, the role of the English Department is shaped by both the academic and personal needs of our students. Based on the linguistically diverse composition of students, the English Department aims for its educators to teach the English language using ESL strategies that follow the Cambridge Curriculum. It further aims to raise the level of English of students who are first-time English speakers, while still challenging and advancing the students who are of a high level. Additionally, through the collaboration of the English Department with other subjects, English concepts and vocabulary from these other subject are revised within the English classes, so as to better equip students at a cross-curricular level.

Structure of the English Classes

Primary school English classes are taught from Grade 1 to Grade 5. Learners scoring between A0-A1 on their Oxford Placement Test are required to join a separate Bridging Class where they are taught the basics of the English Language, such as the alphabet and phonics, while still following the Cambridge Curriculum. Through observation and further assessment, students from this class can be considered to return to their mainstream classes at quarterly intervals throughout the year.

Secondary school English classes are taught from Grade 6 to Grade 8. Based on their Oxford Placement Test scores, they are divided into three levels. Students scoring between A0-A1 are assigned to the Beginner Class, those scoring between A2-B1 are assigned to the Intermediate Class, and students scoring B2 and above, are assigned to the Advanced Class. Students in these classes are taught according to their level while still following the Cambridge Curriculum. Through regular objective observation and testing, teachers can suggest students be moved to a different level based on their needs. After sufficient evidence has been provided, a student may be moved.

High School English classes are taught from Grade 9 to Grade 12, where the main focus is preparing them with the tools they need to take the IGCSE and IELTS examinations, as well as teaching them various writing and speaking skills.
