High School English Language Arts Teacher

Job Goal
- To provide a rich and varied High School English Language Arts program to empower students to advance with an established literate identity and attain the capacity to be broadly literate, having read, viewed, analyzed and discussed a wide range of genres and disciplines for both pleasure and knowledge
- To establish a rich language learning environment that is respectful, intellectually challenging, motivating, engaging, and integrates subjects across the curriculum
- To instill in students the desire to be life-long learners with a growth mindset that they can achieve their goals in life if they are English proficient
Performace responsibilities
- Uses the current English Language Arts/English Language Development framework to develop and deliver curriculum aligned to Common Core Anchor Standards in reading, writing, speaking, and listening
- Builds lessons based on preparing students for college and career success as well as successfully navigating life in the 21st century by including outcomes targeted to address the key themes in ELA
- Designs lessons around the four C’s (communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity) while addressing the three R’s (rigor, relationships, and relevance)
- Aligns instruction to the meet the four assessment claims for English Language Arts/Literacy in reading, writing, speaking/listening and research/inquiry
- Develops standards for critical analysis through group discussions based on a variety of mass media and classical and contemporary literature
- Plans inquiry-based units, interdisciplinary projects and multi-modal projects
- Encourages students to think independently and to express original ideas
- Collaborates with other teachers to designs thematic units aligned to the English Language Arts/English Language Development Framework
- Uses a variety of instructional strategies and technology to provide an enriching classroom experience
- Provides individual and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of students with varying intellectual abilities, attitudes, and cultural backgrounds
- Provides remedial programs for students who have not achieved language competency commensurate with their potential
- Provides enrichment or lesson extension to students who are advanced
- Uses formative assessments and other types of multiple measures to assess student learning and make instructional decisions and adjustments
- Instructs students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in law and administrative regulations and procedures of the academy
- Maintains standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment
- Maintains professional competence through extended training
- Selects and uses appropriate textbooks, instructional aids, and maintains required inventory records
- Communicates with parents and school counselors on student progress
- Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems
- Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned workday
- Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs
- Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities
- Participates cooperatively with the appropriate administrator to develop the method by which he/she will be evaluated in conformance with district guidelines
- Performs other duties that may be assigned by the principal or the academy
