High School Mathematics Teacher

Job Goals

  • To prepare students for college, careers, and civic life by developing mathematically competent individuals who can use mathematics in their personal lives, at work, and as a means for comprehending and influencing the world in which they live
  • To develop and implement a highly comprehensive standards-based instructional program
  • To teach students how to apply strategies and techniques to accurately solve diverse types of mathematical problems
  • To develop mastery in each student the necessary mathematical procedures and problem-solving skills to become proficient and confident to solve complex mathematical concepts and apply them to the real world
  • To encourage students to develop sound opinions and articulate defensible claims based on knowledge and experience in solving mathematical concepts
  • To provide a rich curriculum that encourages both personal and academic achievement, challenging students to excel in mathematics and in their personal development

Performance Responsibilities

  • Uses the Mathematics Framework that applies the principles of focus, coherence, and rigor in building units of study based on how students acquire conceptual understanding, procedural skills and fluency, and the ability to apply mathematics to solve problems
  • Builds lessons based on preparing students for college and career success which include incorporating the four basic math claims: Claim 1 – Developing conceptual understanding and procedural fluency; Claim 2 – Solving well-posed problems in pure and applied mathematics; Claim 3 – Clearly and precisely constructing arguments and critiquing the reasoning of others; and Claim 4 – Analyzing complex, real-world scenarios to interpret and solve problems
  • Uses a variety of instructional strategies such as demonstrations, discussions, lectures, lab activities in order to assist students in developing logical, critical, and creative thinking skills, drawing conclusions, solving problems, achieving improved interpersonal relationships, and making value judgments
  • Incorporates three teaching models based on the learning needs of the students - explicit instruction, interactive instruction, and implicit instruction
  • Uses formative and summative assessments and other types of multiple measures to assess student learning and make instructional decisions and adjustments
  • Provides individual and small group instruction and includes differentiation in order to adapt the curriculum to meet the needs of students with varying intellectual abilities, attitudes, and cultural backgrounds
  • Incorporates education technology into instructional and for student engagement to provide a challenging and interesting educational environment for all students
  • Collaborates with other teachers in a PLC setting to share best practices and assess student work determine progress and plan interventions and extensions
  • Maintains standards of student behavior to provide an orderly and productive classroom environment
  • Maintains professional competence through extended training
  • Selects and uses appropriate textbooks, instructional aids, technology, and maintains required inventory records
  • Communicates with parents and school counselors on student progress
  • Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems
  • Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned workday
  • Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs
  • Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities
  • Performs other duties that may be assigned by the Dean of Academic Affairs and/or principal
