High School Science (with IB Physics) Teacher

Reports To:  High School Principal (or Assistant Principal)

Scope of Responsibilities:

The teacher’s primary responsibility is to ensure the success of each student as detailed in the ISK mission, vision and student educational aims. Teaching responsibility normally includes both general high school Science/STEM courses (e.g., Introductory Physics 9, STEM Engineering, Introductory Biochemistry 10) and International Baccalaureate (IB) Physics (both higher and standard levels). Assignment may also include any other course that may be reasonably assigned (e.g., STEM, IB Chemistry, Environmental Science, Theory of Knowledge), as well as supervision/teaching of off-schedule student STEM Pathways projects. Additionally, the teacher will be expected to participate in a variety of collaborative teams and committees, fulfil supervision duties as assigned including some evening and weekend events (as well as off-campus trips), serve as advisor to a small group of students, advise students on their Extended Essays or other projects, and supervise/coach one co-curricular activity in the course of the year.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Work as a collaborative member of the high school Science Department and other teams.
  • Implement a program of study that adheres to the high school curriculum, IB or otherwise, as adopted by the Board of Directors
  • Collaborate with colleagues in bringing the ISK Educational Aims to life
  • Differentiate instruction to address preferred learning styles of various students in class
  • Integrate technology within lessons to enhance instructional delivery
  • Understand the school assessment philosophy and conduct ongoing assessment of student progress, using data obtained to adjust instructional content and techniques accordingly
  • Be available to assist students outside of class time
  • Communicate regularly with parents through email, telephone and conferences
  • Maintain professional competence in instructional techniques and in specialized teaching through in-service education activities and self-selected professional growth activities
  • Evaluate and respond to students’ academic, social, emotional and physical growth
  • Keep appropriate, up-to-date records, and prepare progress reports as needed
  • Attend relevant departmental, divisional and K-12 professional meetings
  • Participate on faculty committees and curriculum development programs as required
  • Promote a positive learning environment, including high standards around ISK aims
  • Supervise a student advisory group, including supporting student CAS/L progress
  • Act as an IB Extended Essay supervisor
  • Participate in and, if appropriate, supervise an intercultural trip
  • Sponsor a minimum of one extra-curricular student activity
  • Perform other duties as may be reasonably assigned by the Principal or Assistant Principal.

Qualifications and Requirements

Education RequiredBachelor
MajorScience or related
Additional School Requirements
  • Recent, up-to-date training in relevant subject area including IB training where relevant
  • Student-centered and nurturing personality
  • Commitment to collaborative planning
  • Teacher certification from an accredited university/college
  • Minimum 2 years relevant teaching experience
  • Cultural proficiency and understanding of intercultural learning
  • Proficiency with educational technology
  • Fluent English speaker with excellent writing and communication skills
  • Flexibility and creativity

 

Preferred Qualifications, Skills and Qualities:

  • Master’s Degree in relevant subject(s)
  • Experience with Online/Virtual/Distance teaching and learning
  • Commitment to integrated, experiential, and personalized approaches to instruction
  • Teaching experience in a multi-cultural setting
  • Minimum 2 years teaching experience in specific IB subject area, where relevant
  • Experience teaching integrated STEM courses and projects, and multiple IB Science courses
  • Experience with the Understanding by Design curriculum model
  • Experience with inquiry-based and project-based learning
  • Experience in data analysis and goal setting to improve learning
