High School Social Science Teacher

Job Goal

  • To instill in students a keen sense of ethics and citizenship by developing sincere respect for all persons as equals regardless of ethnicity, nationality, gender identity, and beliefs;
  • To develop in students a deep appreciation about the quality of life in their community, the nation, and their world;
  • To teach students about their responsibility as members of the global community to participate ethically and with humanity in their interactions with members of the world’s various nations, cultures and peoples;
  • To provide a rich and comprehensive curriculum that encourages both personal and academic achievement, challenging students to excel in history/social science and in their personal development.

Performance Responsibilities

  • Uses the 2016 History/Social Sciences Framework to develop units of study in civics/government, economics, geography, and history
  • Develops a balanced history/social sciences curriculum that includes lessons in which students engage in inquiry-based learning, organized around questions of significance, developing their own interpretations, informed by relevant evidence that includes a wide range of perspectives
  • Develops a balanced history/social sciences program involving factual background material, material on current events, discussion time, and other appropriate activities designed to encourage students to develop skills and attitudes, draw conclusions, achieve improved interpersonal relationships, and make value judgments based on scientific methods of inquiry
  • Infuses lessons with biographies, original documents, diaries, letters, legends, speeches, and other narrative artifacts from the past to foster students’ understanding of historical events by revealing ideas, values, fears, and dreams of the people associated with them
  • Uses formative and summative assessments and other types of multiple measures to assess student learning and make instructional decisions and adjustments
  • Provides individual and small group instruction and includes differentiation in order to adapt the curriculum to meet the needs of students with varying intellectual abilities, attitudes, and cultural backgrounds
  • Incorporates education technology into instructional and for student engagement to provide a challenging and interesting educational environment for all students
  • Collaborates with other teachers in a PLC setting to share best practices and assess student work determine progress and plan interventions and extensions
  • Maintains standards of student behavior to provide an orderly and productive classroom environment
  • Maintains professional competence through extended training
  • Selects and uses appropriate textbooks, instructional aids, technology, and maintains required inventory records
  • Communicates with parents and school counselors on student progress
  • Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems
  • Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned work day
  • Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs
  • Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities
  • Performs other duties that may be assigned by the Dean of Academic Affairs and/or Principal

  • Two years of teaching social science at the secondary level
  • Honors/AP teaching experience preferred
  • Extensive knowledge and application of Common Core state standards
