Lead ELA Teacher with Curriculum Development

Summary:

Under the supervision and direction of the Academic Principal and Director of Curriculum, the Middle School ELA Curriculum Developer will take on a teaching commitment along with working directly with Director of Curriculum to develop Middle School ELA curriculum that aligns with Elementary ELA Curriculum. This position will also play an important role to support the School Management to maintain a positive ethos towards the school culture and working environment.   

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • This role will directly report to Director of Curriculum while under the general management by Academic Principal
  • To have up to 70% capacity in teaching commitments for English Language Arts and Social Studies. That equates to 15 to 17 hours of teaching in a week
  • To work with School Management (including Director of Curriculum) and fellow teachers to develop ELA curriculum for grades 6-8 for vertical alignment and horizontal alignment (see appendix below for specific expectations regarding curriculum development)
  • To work with School Management (including Director of Curriculum) and fellow teachers to implement the School ELA Curriculum Policy and school initiatives in ELA  andsocial studies for grades 6-8
  • To work with School Management (including Director of Curriculum) to create a ELA Curriculum Policy for High School Program projected to begin in the 2020-2021 school year
  • To work with School Management to develop overall High School Program projected to begin in the 2020-2021 school year
  • When requested by School Management, to work with Director of Curriculum to provide staff training and development to include scheduling teachers to formally observe her classroom, observe grade 6-8 teachers’ instruction during ELA and Social studies class if requested, and conduct pre-/ post- observation meetings with the teachers
  • When requested by School Management, to work with Director of Curriculum to provide specific coaching in ELAand social studies on the CCSS Standards for good teaching practices, differentiation of instruction, utilizing ongoing formative assessments to guide instructional decision making and planning, and preparation for MAP testing for 6-8
  • When requested by School Management, to offer consultation as a lead ELA teacher  in regards to elementary ELA and Social Studies curriculum: 
    • E.g. To provide support for organize and implement one or two literacy nights, and to provide training and professional development for elementary teachers
    • E.g. To offer potential solutions for identified issues such as modifying a teaching technique, developing or strengthening a routine, or improving communication between the teacher and students
    • E.g. To provide demo lessons for observation to model good practices in English Language Arts and Social Studies
    • E.g. To be a source of guidance for teachers for best practices for instruction, classroom management as well as school policies and procedures
    • E.g. To provide information and suggestions about areas for professional development based on classroom observations and discussions
  • To organize, plan and implement any other school-wide ELA and social studies activities and celebrations that promote humanities subjects within the school
  • To play an important role to support the School Management to maintain a positive ethos towards the school culture and working environment
  • To meet with teachers and administration as needed to discuss and document the following: successful teaching practices
  • English Language Artsand Social Studies lessons and activities in a shared folder on the external hard drive
  • Middle school and High School EnglishLanguage Arts and Social Studiescurriculum review, and create an inventory of teaching resources/tools for the curriculum appropriate year level work outside the written curriculum data analysis for MAP and grade level standards based assessments

  • Since many kindergarteners are still learning how to behave in a classroom setting, a high level of patience and behavioral management skills are needed
  • Kindergarten or elementary teaching experience in China or abroad preferred
  • Drama and music teaching experiences would be considered a plus
  • Teaching experience in a multi-cultural environment
  • Ability to collaborate with local Chinese working partners and international working partners, teachers and school staff
  • Capable in developing positive relationship with students and parents 
  • Be able to apply constructive and inquisitive approach in teaching students, and assist students learning
  • Competent in differentiating and identifying students various needs and provide a catering and fluid educational approach
  • Acquiring skills in developing school curriculum and program further in collaboration with other teachers and staff
