Librarian

The Librarian is responsible for the management of the school library.

 

Responsibilities

  • Collaborating with teachers in order to support curriculum and learning
  • Teaching information and digital literacy skills
  • Encouraging teachers to integrate technology in instruction
  • Promoting Literacy Programs and Reading by organizing events such as:
  • Organizing guest speaker visits: author/illustrator/storyteller visits
  • Organizing Book Fairs
  • Running Book Clubs
  • Reaching challenges and other literacy program initiatives.
  • Providing access to online resources for teachers and students and continuously reminding and encouraging teachers and students to utilize those resources
  • Ensuring that all students have access to readings appropriate for their differentiated needs and offer books in a variety of formats
  • Organizing
    • PD for teaching staff
    • Workshops for parents
  • Developing library policies
  • Developing an annual budget
  • Library planning and collection development that will be appropriate to the curriculum and meet the students’ needs
  • Selecting, evaluating, organizing and managing subscriptions to databases, online learning tools, magazines aligned with the curriculum, teaching and learning needs of the school community
  • Managing library staff and parent or student volunteers
  • Networking with external agencies and support groups
  • Advocating the importance of the library in students’ learning
  • Creating a safe, welcoming space for the school community

  • Familiarity with Destiny School Library Management Software
  • Knowledge of library policies, procedures, methods, ethics and professional standards
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and spoken.
  • Research Skills
  • Computer skills including the ability to operate computerized library, spreadsheet, word-processing, spreadsheets, email, database and graphics and website development programs at a highly proficient level
  • Knowledge of library systems for cataloguing, acquisitions and searching, on-line bibliographic utilities capabilities and information resources of the Internet and other electronic databases
  • Comfortable delivering presentations and speaking in front of large groups.
  • Organization skills in order to manage the volume of books
  • Management and coaching skills to oversee, guide, and develop library staff and volunteers
