Lower School Coordinator

Reporting to: Principal/ CEO

HOS is a guide who helps to support teachers' progress in the process of successfully progressing students academically, emotionally, and physically in a prepared Montessori environment, which challenges each child to reach his/her full potential, by Montessori philosophy and procedures.

The Section Heads will report to the Principal. A Section Head is directly responsible for providing pastoral care (through the School Counselor, homeroom, and classroom teachers) and academic supervision to students in their assigned Wing. They are also responsible (through the Principal) for maintaining high standards of professional conduct and curriculum delivery from teaching staff in their Wing.

The Section Head must be active in the provision of a positive, non-threatening learning environment where teachers can teach and students can learn.

Leadership Role

The Pastoral Care of students in their wing by:

  • Maintaining daily contact with homeroom and/or classroom teachers about the well-being of students in their care
  • Acting in loco parentis demonstrating; fairness, cultural sensitivity, tolerance, and understanding in putting the needs of our students first
  • Meet with parents to discuss a student’s ongoing problem of a social and/or academic nature.
  • Meet with troubled students to ascertain their problems and follow through with arrangements for ongoing assistance for students if necessary. This assistance may include the following: Parents, School counselor, ESL or Special Needs teacher, Principal, Homeroom teacher
  • Managing the placement of students to best benefit their learning
  • Keeping an accurate tally of Conduct Points for each student
  • Being familiar with Ministry of Education (MOE) regulations and OUR SCHOOL policies as they relate to the code of student conduct and remaining fully in compliance with them
  • Actively supporting the Assertive Discipline policy adopted in the school and if required to do so, deducting and/or apportioning Conduct Points wisely and fairly
  • Dealing with student disputes as they occur; adjudicating and advising wisely and fairly
  • Taking preventive measures to avoid student infractions such as;
  • Looking for ways to praise good behavior
  • Organizing activities and events of interest to the vast majority of students and rewarding participation
  • Supporting a homeroom program designed to deal with issues about youth
  • Student misbehavior need only be referred to the Principal for repeat offenses or an infraction by a student deemed to be both serious and injurious to themselves and/or others.

The Administration of academic affairs by:

  • assisting and supporting the Curriculum Coordinator, the Heads of Departments, and the Principal in providing a high standard of curriculum and curriculum delivery to our students.
  • supporting the Principal (through Heads of Department) in directly monitoring teacher planning of homeroom and classroom teachers in their Wing
  • assisting and supporting the Examination process as directed by the Principal
  • performing other duties as assigned.

The Appraisal of homeroom and/or classroom teachers by:

  • supporting the Principal in the informal and formal appraisal processes in place to ensure high standards of professionalism in our teaching staff for the benefit of all at the school.

Areas of Responsibility

  • Strategic Development of the Early Years Section; responsible for the development & implementation of short, medium, and long-term Elementary aims, plans, policies, and practices, producing the annual Early Years Improvement Plan (EIP), which supports the SDP.
  • Pastoral Care; model & support OUR SCHOOL Code of Conduct, student discipline & class management: liaise with team, GC, and parents as necessary (including follow-up of discipline issues, safety, House system, Environmental Committee, bus behavioral issues, uniform, transition, induction, etc).
  • Teamwork: Promote effective Elementary teamwork, provide guidance, support & motivation, and chair regular TL meetings (at least monthly).
  • Ensure that staff understands, follows, and supports OUR SCHOOL aims, Vision, policies, and practices.
  • Parental Engagement; involving parents actively & productively in their child’s education.
  • Curriculum: support Subject Coordinators, VP, and HODs to ensure that the American (or Local/MOE-approved) Curriculum is reviewed, developed, implemented & assessed appropriately across Elementary.
  • Appraisal of TL & Early Years Supervisor; use the school Appraisal format, Coaching, and informal classroom observations, inform targets, and monitor/support individual development (including marking checks, ensuring displays support the curriculum/ School Values, checking TL Planners). Ensure TL appraise their team appropriately.
  • Book orders; support Subject Coordinators, TL & VP with choice of textbooks to support curriculum requirements & check annual textbook orders before submission.
  • Resources: ensure that the Elementary team has access to, or produces, appropriate resources to support teaching & learning.
  • Extra-curricular Program: Support Activities Coordinator, and PE Coordinators to ensure the provision of the After School Program (Crash Courses, Support Classes, Activity program) and Elementary events (Sports Day, Open Days, Big Day, National Day, Mothers’ Day, KG2 Graduation, Citizenship Day, Grade & marketing events 
  • Student Portfolios; accurate & up-to-date.
  • Staffing: support VP with Elementary staff recruitment, induction & confirmation. Inform VP/P & CPD Coordinator of training needs.
  • Duty rotas & cover; effective & fair staff deployment (eg. covering absence, Break times, ASP, Babysitting, and after-school duties).

Other

  • Follow, support & help to develop all school aims, Vision, improvement plans, policies, and practices
  • Take an active part in organizing & supporting School activities & events as required
  • Undertake other professional duties as reasonably delegated by the VP/AP & Principal (teaching, duties, cover for Deputy Principal, MOE formalities, Marketing events, etc)
  • Organize & attend committees as reasonably delegated by VP/P
  • Inform VP of resource and training needs
  • Attend/lead CPD/INSET & Coaching relating to personal/school targets related to JD
  • Meet deadlines as requested by VP/AP/ P
  • Promote effective teamwork across the whole school
  • Promote OUR SCHOOL positively with the community while maintaining complete confidentiality.
  • Respect local culture, customs, and laws
