Mathematics Teacher

Goals of the Mathematics Program

At Horizon International Bilingual School, the role of the Mathematics Department is shaped by both the academic and personal needs of our students. Based on the varied range of students, in terms of Mathematical understanding as well as their differing English level the Mathematics Department aims for its educators to teach conceptual understanding of mathematics and terminology by following the Cambridge Curriculum. Additionally, through the collaboration of the Mathematics Department with English Department mathematical concepts, terminology and vocabulary will be revised within the English classes, so as to better equip students at a cross-curricular level.

Structure of the Mathematics Classes

Primary school Mathematics classes are taught from Grade 1 to Grade 5. The Cambridge Primary Mathematics Curriculum is presented in five areas: Number, Geometry, Measure, Handling data and Problem-solving. The first four content areas are all underpinned by problem-solving, which describes using techniques and skills and the application of understanding and strategies in solving problems.

Secondary school Mathematics classes are taught from Grade 6 to Grade 8. The Cambridge Lower Secondary Mathematics curriculum is presented in six content areas: Number, Algebra, Geometry, Measure, Handling data and Problem-solving. The first five content areas are all underpinned by Problem-solving, which provides a structure for the application of mathematical skills. Mental strategies are also a key part of the Number content. Together, these two areas form a progressive step preparing students for entry onto IGCSE® level courses. This curriculum focuses on principles, patterns, systems, functions, and relationships so that learners can apply their mathematical knowledge and develop a holistic understanding of the subject. The Cambridge Lower Secondary Mathematics curriculum framework continues the journey from the Cambridge Primary mathematics framework and provides a solid foundation upon which the later stages of education can be built.

High School English classes are taught from Grade 9 to Grade 12, where the main focus is preparing them with the tools they need to take the IGCSE (Grade 9 - Grade 10) and A-level (Grade 11-Grade 12) examinations. IGCSE Mathematics is an essential subject for all learners, Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics encourages the development of mathematical knowledge as a key life skill, and as a strong basis for more advanced study. The syllabus aims to build learners' confidence by helping them develop competence and fluency with mathematical concepts, methods, and skills, as well as a feel for numbers, patterns, and relationships. The syllabus also places a strong emphasis on solving problems and presenting and interpreting results. Learners also gain an understanding of how to communicate and reason using mathematical concepts.

Cambridge International AS - A Level Mathematics develops a set of transferable skills. These include the skill of working with mathematical information, as well as the ability to think logically and independently, consider accuracy, model situations mathematically, analyze results and reflect on findings. Learners can apply these skills across a wide range of subjects and these skills equip them well for progression to higher education or directly into employment.
