Middle School English Language Arts Teacher

Responsibilities

  • Teach a minimum of 4 English language arts courses (or others as designated) per week (usually 5 classes each course)
  • Work with students in middle school grades, as assigned for the school year; teaching assignments take into consideration the need of the school as well as a teacher’s area(s) of interest
  • Work on curriculum developing, which includes preparing effective lesson units based on the school’s curriculum formats using the Understanding by Design (UbD)
  • Lead an enhancement and or enrichment for middle school students that need specialized support during EEE
  • Promote our “Expected School-wide Learning Results (ESLRs):  global citizenship, motivated learners, healthy individuals, and persons of character
  • Maintain and update timely student records including grading (homework, grade books, progress reports, report cards, student attendance, and other required documents
  • Be actively involved in (at least two) extra-curricular activities as a faculty sponsor/advisor/coach/helper/school committee member
  • Collaborate with grade level team to plan, teach, and assess interdisciplinary units
  • Actively fulfill assigned supervision duties, which could include serving as a homeroom teacher
  • Able to work closely with students who exhibit near English proficiency.
  • Meet with parents, students and other teachers when necessary to develop interventions for students with academic or emotional/behavioral needs
  • If needed because a sufficient MS workload is not available then work with high school English courses which could include departmental electives with advance notice provided
  • Serve as a substitute teacher when needed
  • Take an active role in required meetings (departmental; grade level; committees, faculty; etc.)
  • Assist with additional duties as assigned

  • Bachelor’s degree required in elementary education but a bachelors’ degree in a related field (early childhood, curriculum) along with a teaching license is considered 
  • Must possess a valid teaching license/certificate in elementary or early childhood education
  • At least 2 years full-time teaching in the same position in a regular elementary school setting
  • Evidence of current relevant professional development especially at the lower elementary grade levels especially in language arts
