Middle School/KS3 English Teacher

Role Purpose

To take responsibility for each pupil, ensuring his or her pastoral and academic needs are met as fully as possible.

Role Functions

Daily Tasks

  • Meet class in form classroom on first bell
  • Take registration - this must be done only by the teacher by 8.30am
  • Collect notes
  • Check absences and attendance, punctuality etc. 
  • Monitor and sign Pupil Planners, using it as a communication to parents. Acknowledge parent notes
  • Check daily class report sheet, noting problems or concerns
  • Discuss issues arising from daily report, uniform, behaviour, punctuality etc
  • Speak to individual pupils requiring guidance
  • Monitor areas of concern (uniform, attendance, behaviour, class work and punctuality.) Take appropriate action
  • Issue daily class report sheet, notices and any other information.

Weekly Tasks

  • Keep up-to-date detailed records for each pupil in Form Class Record Book
  • Address expected behaviours, routines and problems arising from non compliance by pupils
  • Liaise with Learning Manager re concerns
  • Monitor pupils on report, making referrals as required to Learning Manager
  • Follow up on attendance, outstanding absence information
  • Guide pupils on completion of Pupil Planner information (test results, accurate recording of homework, absence etc).

Other Tasks

  • Preparation of academic reports
  • Deal with referrals from class teachers (Referral Form)
  • Make referrals to Learning Manager
  • Observe for signs of pupils at risk, health, stress
  • Develop a positive relationship with each pupil and their parent/guardian
  • Convey information to parents / carers by appropriate method
  • Encourage positive behaviours, give praise and rewards as and when appropriate
  • Liaise with other staff and/SENCO as necessary
  • Deliver the Personal Social Health and Citizenship Education (PSHCE) programme, evaluating as required
  •  Provide all information re delivery of PSHCE programme to HOPC for monitoring as requested.
  • Other reasonable tasks as required
  • Staff should adhere to the guidance on Child Protection when interviewing pupils.
