PYP Coordinator

The primary function of the PYP Coordinator is to work with the Head of School to share the responsibility of pedagogical leadership and school management. You will ensure the program is taught, planned and assessed collaboratively at all instructional levels; will facilitate discussions with teachers on pedagogical aspects of the curriculum; will ensure all procedures and timelines are strategically planned and followed for authorization and evaluation.

The PYP Coordinator exerts leadership and the authority of her/his expertise in the development of PYP curriculum, instruction, and assessment Preschool through Grade 5. In addition, s/he serves as administrator for the overall curriculum, providing all the data, documents, and reports required by the school’s administration and the PYP office of the International Baccalaureate Organization. Duties of the PYP coordinator are outlined below:

 

PYP Coordinator Responsibilities

Teachers

  • Stimulate, motivate and monitor the development of the PYP program in the school
  • Observe and provide supervision in classrooms for the purpose of helping teachers to implement instructional principles and methodologies pertaining to the PYP
  • Support professional development by planning, organizing and leading in-house teacher training workshops
  • Have weekly planning meetings with all teachers in the program and document them
  • Assist and support teachers in their understanding of the PYP
  • Keep teachers up to date with developments within the PYP and of suitable workshops
  • Keep current with developments with the IBO
  • Implement the new enhancements
  • Ensure high-quality PYP related displays around the school
  • Ensure PYP classroom environments
  • Lead and execute the PYP Evaluation visit
  • Oversee resources and proactively source materials, resources, experiences for units

 

Students 

  • Ensure students are educated about the terminology, practices, and beliefs of the program
  • Facilitate student involvement in assemblies using PYP themes
  • Supervise the Grade 5/6 Exhibition, with particular regard to time management, and the assigning of and monitoring of the work of mentors.
  • Develop and run a PYP student council
  • Oversee and coach student assemblies and performances

 

Parents 

  • Promote the understanding of the PYP to the wider community
  • Disseminate information about the PYP, relating to its philosophy, curriculum, and implementation
  • Plan and give presentations about the PYP to parents during parent education sessions, in cooperation with other staff members
  • Collaborate in giving a presentation for Grade 5 parents, and arranging for the presentation of the Exhibition

 

Administration

  • Form and chair a PYP steering committee
  • Attend meetings with the administration to plan for implementation
  • Document all planning meetings and to keep dossiers of examples of work required
  • Use planning guide to plan with teachers
  • Produce a curriculum guide for each year level, including all year level expectations 
  • Work on reviewing and refining the curriculum map for Preschool-Grade 5 
  • Assist with the refinement of reporting system
  • Review and update all policies (language, assessment, inclusion, academic honesty
  • Develop an action plan for PYP 
  • Propose and oversee the budget for PYP materials, oversee the timely ordering of materials
  • Lead the schools PYP evaluation self-study and successfully complete evaluation visit 

 

International Baccalaureate Organization

  • Maintain the required contact between the school and the IBO 
  • Provide all required data to the IBO, after checking accuracy 
  • Distribute information from the IBO to appropriate members of staff
  • Maintain documentation relating to curriculum and assessment within the PYP, and have teachers up-date this as needed
  • Develop and monitor the timeline for the PYP action plan
  • Review the action plan and follow through with any feedback based on this
  • Register yourself as PYP Coordinator, so that you are the point of contact for the regional office
  • Register all teachers for their ‘My IB’
  • Register teachers for regional workshops as soon as they are approved
  • Consult with the administration team for any other workshops during the year that you feel would be beneficial to the school

  • Bachelor’s Degree in subject area(s)
  • Post graduate training in Educational Management
  • Trained and experienced IB PYP Workshop Leader and School Site Visitor.
  • Minimum of five (5) years teaching experience with the PYP
  • Experience as a curriculum coordinator for the PYP
  • Experience in middle management of a school
  • Valid teaching certification (or equivalent) for subject teaching area(s)
  • Native fluency in the language of instruction you are being hired for (English, Mandarin or Spanish)
  • Fluent in English (able to successfully lead workshops and work collaboratively in the language)
  • Advanced knowledge and skills in using ICT to enhance the learning process
