Reading Specialist/ESL Teacher

General Responsibilities:

Identify the nature of reading deficiencies/difficulties experienced by students through the use of assessments, other information, and their academic achievement.  Serve as a resource person to the faculty, counselors, students and their parents. Work with students to develop reading skills, fluency, and comprehension.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Principal in the improvement and implementation of educational programs
  • Works collaboratively with staff to provide services to meet the individual needs of students
  • Provides supportive academic services to teachers, students, and parents
  • Actively participate in all Child Study Team meetings
  • Assess students referred by the Principal
  • Analyze all diagnostic test results and prepare confidential reports for the principal
  • Recommend specific classroom strategies and modifications to meet individual learner needs
  • Counsel faculty regarding strategies to cope with individual student learning styles
  • Counsel parents regarding ways of improving a student’s acquisition of knowledge and development of skills necessary for success at a particular grade level
  • Assists in the implementation and improvement of the reading curriculum
  • Assists the classroom teachers in implementation of reading strategies, identification of appropriate activities, organization and management of the classroom, selection of materials, and identification of specific needs of children
  • Perform other tasks as may be directed by the Principal
