Secondary Theatre Teacher

POSITION OVERVIEW: 

The American School of El Salvador (Escuela Americana/EA) is seeking a dynamic theatre educator to join its faculty for the 2023-2024 school year (or beginning January 2023). The Theatre Teacher will help students as both individuals and groups, will foster an appreciation of Theatre, and provide a joyful and supportive learning environment for dramatic development. Candidates should be energetic and collaborative, as well as have a sense of humor.

POSITION-SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES: 

The Secondary Theatre Teacher will have responsibility for teaching all theatre classes as assigned and coordinating divisional level and ensemble performance schedules. The Theatre Teacher will collaborate with other members of the Visual and Performing Arts department. 

 

In support of this teachers are expected to: 

  • Plan unit lessons and curriculum that align with school-adopted standards and benchmarks. 
  • Instruct classes with enthusiasm, creativity, and sensitivity to student learning styles. 
  • Direct and execute secondary dramatic performances including at least one play and one musical per year
  • Organize and maintain rehearsal schedules including both in-school and after-school times
  • Contribute at least 15 hours per semester beyond the regular contracted hours in support of student rehearsals and performances
  • Utilize technology for instructing students, maintaining records, communicating information to parents, and promoting student and drama program achievements. 
  • Facilitate theatre enrichment opportunities and seek extracurricular performances on behalf of students. 
  • Commitment to professional growth through participation in professional learning communities and development opportunities. 
  • Take an active role in the pastoral care of homeroom or advisory groups. 

 

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE: 

  • Additional specialty in choral music, dance, and/or technical theatre 
  • Experience using Understanding by Design to develop learning units 
  • Proven ability to work in a multi-cultural environment 
  • Recent and relevant professional development in teaching and learning 

 

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Teachers at EA are expected to: 

  • Communicate and liaise regularly with administration and fellow teachers in regards to planning, assessment, parent and community contact, subject organization, and classroom issues including discipline, expectations, and routines 
  • Communicate and liaise with other school colleagues to promote social and emotional awareness 
  • Take an active role in the management and pastoral care of class groups 
  • Attend, and constructively contribute to, staff meetings and professional development
  • Assist in the supervision of student breaks, arrival, and dismissal as assigned
  • Coordinate class activities as deemed necessary 
  • Maintain up-to-date records of assessment, attendance, planning, reports, conferences, and communication with parents 
  • Establish links with the parent community to ensure that parents are kept well informed about student progress 
  • Assist, as required, in the development of social and emotional curricular materials 
  • Act as a resource/contact/support for new staff members (i.e. curriculum, schedules, procedures) 
  • Participate in and, assist with, school events as required 

 

SCHOOL HOURS: 

7:30-4:00 PM Monday-Friday

Additional School Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Current teaching certification appropriate to age level and subject specializations 
  • A minimum of an undergraduate degree in Education or the area of expertise required. 
  • Previous teaching experience, and strong knowledge in the area of specializations at the required levels of study. 
  • Thorough understanding of the curricular elements of theatrical studies, and knowledge of theatre curriculum. 
  • Experience staging plays and musical theatre productions in a school setting
  • A proven collaborator and skilled at working well with others. 
  • A positive attitude and strong interpersonal skills 
  • Expertise in building active, collaborative classroom programs which develop a sense of classroom community and trust. 
  • A solid understanding of a secondary school organization, programs, and students. 
  • A proven ability to differentiate instruction and integrate learning.
