How do I become an online ESL teacher?

If you want to teach English as a second language, you need to get TEFL certified.

It starts with choosing the right TEFL course!

With thousands of providers offering TEFL courses, we know it can be daunting to know where to start. We want to help you make an informed decision and hopefully save you some time.

This blog unpacks everything from how online TEFL courses work to learning the differences between three TEFL courses offered by Teach Away, to help you choose the right TEFL course.

Here’s what you should be learning in an online TEFL course:

  • Lesson Planning: Online TEFL programs emphasize creating structured and engaging lesson plans for effective teaching. Feedback and assessments, like in the University of Toronto’s TEFL course, refine teaching skills.
  • Simplifying Grammar: Teaching grammar effectively is crucial; online TEFL courses ensure teachers understand English mechanics, bridging the gap between unfamiliar concepts and student comprehension.
  • Teaching Key Skills: Online TEFL programs focus on fostering listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills for comprehensive language development, adapting to online teaching environments.
  • Classroom Management: Both online and in-person TEFL programs teach classroom management techniques to handle discipline and maintain an effective learning environment.
  • Learning Materials: Online TEFL courses teach how to create and adapt diverse materials like text, visuals, and audio, building a versatile resource collection for teaching careers. Traditional and online TEFL programs cover similar content with some distinct differences

Getting TEFL certified is the first to becoming an online ESL teacher. With a TEFL certification, considered to be the industry’s gold standard for ESL teachers, you’ll be trained on how to become a stand-out ESL teacher.

When choosing a TEFL course, make sure the curriculum is comprehensive and offered by internationally recognized institutions.
