Job Description: Librarian
General Objective of the Position
To provide a well-managed, resourceful, and inclusive library environment that supports the educational goals of ASFC. The librarian fosters a love for reading and learning, promotes information literacy, and enhances the overall educational experience through leadership, collaboration, and a strong commitment to the school’s mission and values.
The librarian:
- Curates a diverse collection of resources to support inquiry-based learning.
- Collaborates with teachers to integrate library services into the curriculum.
- Encourages critical thinking, curiosity, and lifelong learning.
- Creates a welcoming space that invites exploration, discovery, and engagement with literature and information.
- Serves as a digital-age guide for students and staff, promoting responsible and effective use of technology and information.
Key Responsibilities
In line with the administrative and pedagogical framework of ASFC, the librarian is expected to:
- Develop students’ transdisciplinary skills.
- Participate in weekly planning and present on Thursdays.
- Collaborate in the planning and execution of IB Units of Inquiry.
- Complete assigned professional development (online and/or in-person) in a timely manner.
- Monitor and document student assessments.
- Adapt curriculum and strategies for students with special educational needs.
- Prepare for observations and/or supervision visits.
- Implement ASFC’s Program of Inquiry and curriculum.
- Understand and apply ASFC policies: Linguistics, Inclusion, Assessment, Anti-Bullying, Academic Integrity, Child Protection, and Admissions.
- Embrace and implement the concept-based learning philosophy of the IB.
- Promote a culture of respect, tolerance, equity, empathy, and cooperation.
- Foster a learning environment aligned with ASFC’s mission, vision, and values.
Activities
Daily
- Design, manage, and adapt library systems to support curricular goals.
- Maintain a well-organized and accessible library catalog using appropriate classification systems.
- Assist students and staff in accessing and using resources effectively, including digital platforms.
- Promote multilingualism and multimodal learning.
Weekly
- Analyze and enhance the systemic impact of the library on teaching and learning.
- Develop a deeper understanding of community needs.
- Conduct surveys to identify content and activity requirements.
- Support students in using technology for research and learning.
Monthly
- Share insights on teaching and learning approaches and offer services to support them.
- Highlight and promote use of the IB Learner Profile across the community.
- Develop collections that reflect academic, personal, and cultural needs.
- Encourage recreational reading and cultivate lifelong readers.
Annual
- Demonstrate understanding of the IB ATL (Approaches to Learning), ATT (Approaches to Teaching), and the Learner Profile.
- Stay current with educational technology trends and integrate them into the library.
Occasional
- Oversee maintenance of library spaces and equipment.
- Collaborate with librarians and educators in professional networks.
- Monitor library usage statistics and report on impact.
- Support ASFC events as a staff member.
- Report bullying incidents in accordance with ASFC policy.
