Competencies:

Educational:

  • Minimum qualification - first degree from a recognized University in the subject area and other relevant fields
  • A Master’s degree and exposure to the IB curriculum is an added advantage.

Other:

  • A graduate subject specialist preferably with a teaching certification
  • A minimum of 5 years of teaching experience in a reputable institution is preferred although 3 years of experience under certain circumstances will be acceptable.
  • Knowledge of the IB and MYP syllabi will be a bonus.
  • Dedication to the job, sound control and discipline in the classroom as well as good relations with students

Direct report: The Physics teacher is line-managed by the Head of the Science Department.

SOS-Hermann Gmeiner International College is a dynamic co-educational boarding school in Tema, Ghana. We offer quality pre-university education for students from SOS children’s villages across Africa as well as others from the host country, Ghana, and beyond.

SOS-HGIC is an authorized MYP IB World School, and familiarity/experience with the MYP, as well as the IBDP (International Baccalaureate Diploma Program), would be an advantage. The school seeks suitably qualified applicants with a firm commitment to teaching with an experienced faculty and a highly motivated student body in the 2023/2024 academic year.

Role Overview:

  • To teach Physics up to the IB Diploma Level in a way that will enable the students to gain a thorough knowledge of the subject and to pass both the internal and external examinations so that they are equipped to enter tertiary institutions or to pursue other avenues of learning or careers.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • To teach the students Physics
  • Develop lesson plans for the effective teaching of the courses assigned.
  • To draw up a teaching program / Scheme of work and records of work for the implementation of various syllabuses.
  • To supervise projects and coursework as well as the IB DP extended essays.
  • To set and mark classwork and internal examinations, including the Entrance Exams.
  • To complete the semester and other reports.
  • To support students in writing and keeping student profiles.
  • Attend all staff and departmental meetings.
  • To draw up lists of books and equipment required for the teaching of the subject for the Vice Principal.
  • To maintain discipline in and out of the classroom.
  • To obtain ongoing training in the subject and syllabuses by attending workshops, courses, etc.
  • To supervise extra-curricular activities, community service, and other school functions in and out of normal school hours.
  • To perform any other duties as may be required by the Principal, for the benefit of the College.
  • To foster, implement, and uphold the objectives and philosophy of the College at all times.
