High School
Physics/ Calculus Teacher

A+ World Academy is one of the most unique international boarding schools in the world. We give sixty-four 11th and 12th-grade students as well as gap year students the opportunity to take Secondary and Advanced Placement courses at a fully accredited high school at sea that travels to 15+ port cities on the oldest fully-rigged sailing ship still operating in the world. We offer a challenging, rigorous, one-of-a-kind program that develops students into global citizens and leaders with grit, resilience, and perseverance. A+ World Academy students are pushed to their limits in every aspect while learning to be proactive problem solvers with practical experience and a global perspective. While creating strong academic achievement in our students, we engage them in an extensive experiential education program of rigorous maritime endeavor, close-knit communal living, study in foreign lands, and personal mentoring from teachers that cultivates their self-knowledge, resilience, problem-solving, and leadership abilities far beyond that of a more traditional school setting. Our students don’t just worry about getting to class on time; they deal with real issues such as monitoring water consumption from a shared source, recycling’s impact on the environment, and living in a socially conscious way to reduce pollution. They have numerous maritime and community responsibilities, including day and night watches, cleaning, and galley. Our students develop life skills such as leadership, resilience, grit, accountability, and teamwork, all of which will lead them to success in university and life. They overcome challenges daily that strengthen both their character and confidence.

All of this applies to our teachers as well. There is a tremendous emphasis on taking care of our ship, and our students, and one must truly want the type of engagement, rapport, and tutoring that comes with this program to be successful. Our teachers go far beyond content specialists and act as parents, mentors, tutors, teachers, and caregivers. A successful candidate for our program must also portray tolerance and a true desire to foster cultural awareness and understanding conversations in a non-judgmental and supportive way. This experience is as difficult and exhausting as it is rewarding; if you are the right person, then you will not count the hours of a workday but will count the lives impacted within the ten-month program.

We have two math teachers onboard each program year, an upper-level maths teacher and a lower-level maths teacher. The upper Maths teacher (this job opening ) is responsible for teaching AP Physics, Pre-AP Calculus, and AP Calculus.

Established in 2014, the Fullriggeren Sørlandet Foundation invested significant resources in developing a unique and competitive school program intended for Norwegians and international students at the upper secondary school level.

While the world still clings to the industrial model of education, we know that experiential learning, place-based curriculum, and community learning models, when combined with traditional methods, provide far more opportunities for deep, constructive learning. We believe the practical hands-on experience expands a student’s understanding beyond memorization and test-taking.

The key to student growth is not academic achievement; it is human development. We know that academic performance is an outcome of several factors that include emotional wellness, learning style, social identification, and cognitive challenge. We want to help young people grow, expand their understanding, live life fully, and have experiences that shape who they are.

Our unique platform and program depend on community and shared responsibility. Our students learn to function in a system (the ship) and understand the importance of the motto Ship, Shipmate, Self. We all take care of our community and home (the ship), take care of others (shipmates), and think of ourselves last.

Students of A+ World Academy do not just sit at desks and take tests. Students of A+ World Academy learn the value of hard work, grit, perseverance, and resilience. Our students know how to give full effort, do their best, learn from their failures, and move forward to success. Our students face differences, challenges, and hardship, and have experiences that will set them apart for the rest of their lives. Our students walk differently.
