The High School Economics Teacher has the rewarding and challenging task of inspiring students to understand the theories, methodologies, and practices that govern the creation and transfer of wealth in society. Students must learn how economists research, discuss, write about, and present economic concepts while applying their learning to real-world contexts. As such, this position offers the teacher flexibility to engage students with creative learning experiences and assessments.


Job goals

  • To instill in students a high regard for studying economics in order to advance their understanding of how economics shapes the world by focusing on the production and consumption of goods and the transfer of wealth to produce and obtain these goods
  • To develop in each student an appreciation of and deep enduring understanding of the benefits of analyzing economics since it generates important insights into individual and aggregate behavior and relationships, and helps in society’s efforts to use scarce resources in a more efficient manner
  • To foster an appreciation in students that a fundamental knowledge of economics is necessary for them to understand its application in improving the living conditions of people in their everyday lives
  • To instill a desire in students to further investigate the benefits of studying economics in order to seek answers to important questions about how people, industries, and countries can maximize their productivity, create wealth, and maintain financial stability
  • To develop students’ mastery of economics content and to focus on applying their knowledge, problem-solving, critical thinking and analytical skills to solve complex societal and international problems and develop innovative solutions
  • To provide optimum opportunities for students to develop their communication skills by recording evidence of economic reasoning through diagrams, illustrations, graphs and/or mathematical operations
  • To provide a rich curriculum that encourages both personal and academic achievement, challenging students to excel in economics and in their personal development


Performance responsibilities

  • Uses an established set of economics standards (state, national, AP, IB, Cambridge) to develop units of study in economics
  • Builds lessons based on preparing students for college and career success, which includes incorporating microeconomics concepts that in any economy, the existence of limited resources along with unlimited wants results in the need to make choices; and incorporating macroeconomic concepts that emphasize the study of national income and price-level determination, economic performance measures, the financial sector, stabilization policies, economic growth, and international economics
  • Designs units that advances students’ abilities to apply abstract reasoning, analysis, deduction and induction, design and framing problems and solutions
  • Creates student-directed inquiry-based lab experiences to provide opportunities for students to apply their skills in organizing, building, computing and evaluating both quantitative and qualitative data in charts, graphs, and other applicable data illustrations
  • Uses a variety of instructional strategies such as demonstrations, discussions, lectures, and collaborative groups in order to assist students in critically applying economic concepts and principles, and reasoning to understand and solve policy issues
  • Uses formative assessments, student projects, and other types of multiple measures to assess student learning and make instructional decisions and adjustments
  • Provides individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of students with varying intellectual abilities, attitudes, and cultural backgrounds
  • Collaborates with other teachers as required by administration
  • Maintains standards of student behavior to provide an orderly and productive classroom environment
  • Maintains professional competence through extended training
  • Selects and uses appropriate textbooks, instructional aids, technology, and maintains required inventory records
  • Communicates with parents and school counselors on student progress
  • Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems
  • Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned workday
  • Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs
  • Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities
  • Participates cooperatively with the appropriate administrator to develop the method by which he/she will be evaluated in conformance with academy guidelines

About the Curriculum:

The school is in its fourth year and aims to prepare students to succeed in the international university arena with the vast majority of students seeking to study in the United States upon graduating.  Our curriculum includes a blend of Chinese national courses, American non-honors high school courses, American honors high school courses, and Advance Placement courses in the experimental sciences, social sciences, and humanities.  Within five years, Vanke Meisha Academy hopes to establish a world-class International Baccalaureate program.
