Primary School Music Teacher - August 2026 Start

Salesian International Primary School is a leading Catholic educational institution based in Tokyo, Japan, offering an innovative International Class program to students from diverse backgrounds. We are currently seeking an experienced and qualified music teacher to join our team for the remainder of the April 2026-March 2027 school year and in preparation for the April 2027-2028 school year. (This is a new position with potential for renewal in the subsequent April 2027-March 2028 school year.) The successful candidate will be responsible for serving as the music teacher for primarily Year 1-2 students (ages 6-8) in our International Class, where bilingual and native English-speaking students learn in an immersive English environment.

General Responsibilities

  • Serve as the Physical Education teacher for primarily Years 1-2 in our International Class of approximately 25-35 students per class
  • Create and maintain a collaborative classroom environment appropriate for the 21st Century that emphasizes diversity and mutual learning in English
  • Implement flexible seating arrangements and learning spaces that promote active engagement for all students
  • Manage and keep detailed records such as for daily schedules, student progress tracking, and parent communication
  • Teach physical education following the physical education curriculum mandated by the Japanese government
  • Teach English classes using the music- and chant-based GrapeSEED curriculum
  • Deliver active project-based STEAM lessons which integrate subject-area content for building inquiry, communication skills, and independent learning.
  • Implement PBL (Problem- and Project-Based Learning) activities appropriate for concrete operational stage development
  • Collaborate with English-speaking Japanese Language teachers in lesson planning and program delivery
  • Facilitate an immersive English-speaking environment throughout the school day
  • Develop English literacy through strong academic leadership and differentiated teaching practices
  • Document and assess student learning through portfolio development
  • Provide individual support and feedback to students
  • Monitor student well-being and social-emotional development
  • Collaborate with parents and support staff to ensure student success
  • Foster cultural sensitivity and appreciation for diversity
  • Support fellow teachers where required, through team teaching and substitute teaching


Skills and Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Physical Education, Elementary Education, Early Childhood Education, or related field
  • Valid teaching license/certification
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience teaching at the primary/elementary level
  • Native or near-native English proficiency
  • Experience with young learners (ages 6-8)
  • Excellent classroom management skills
  • Ability to create engaging, developmentally appropriate lesson plans
  • Proficient in technology use for instruction purposes

Preferred:

  • Experience with Collaborative Classroom™ and/or GrapeSEED® or similar English language acquisition programs
  • Background in STEAM education or inquiry-based learning
  • International school or multicultural classroom experience
  • Familiarity with Piaget's cognitive development theory and its classroom applications
  • Experience with PBL (Project-Based Learning) methodologies
  • Additional language skills (Japanese beneficial but not required)
