Job Description

Responsible for setting high standards of teaching and learning within the classroom, including:

  • High expectations of pupils in every aspect of their work.
  • A commitment to academic excellence and the development and implementation of schemes of work to ensure that each pupil develops at an appropriate pace through differentiated planning and teaching.
  • Achieve excellent public examination results.
  • Establish effective methods of formative and summative assessment of pupils’ work and use them to enhance each individual pupil’s learning.
  • Use rewards and sanctions effectively.
  • Provide high quality written and verbal reports to parents.
  • Keep up-to-date with subject developments outside the school.
  • Foster a spirit of academic enquiry among pupils.
  • Plan, prepare and evaluate lessons, activities and learning and teaching strategies through the maintenance of a professional teaching plan, in active collaboration with peers and individually as necessary.
  • Be open and adaptable to changing circumstances and guidelines.
  • Contribute to and maintain consistency with internal and relevant external marking schedules and moderation procedures.

Contribute to the development of the subject, including:

  • Be actively involved in the development and creation of schemes of work, contributing to subject teaching and pedagogical approaches by sharing knowledge of best practice.
  • Be actively involved in the teaching and learning development programme, providing and receiving constructive feedback as appropriate.
  • Make positive contribution to the subject Super Curriculum and Co-curricular programme.
  • Undertake administrative tasks that are designated by the Head of Subject and contribute to a sense of teamwork and aiding professional development.
  • Advise pupils with options choices relevant to the subject and with university applications and supporting them in preparing for such applications.
  • Active involvement in academic and other learning enrichment trips, including residentials.
  • Participate positively in meetings, follow policies and generally contribute to the effective and efficient running of the school.

Offer an effective contribution to pastoral care in the School, including:

  • Monitor the work of class pupils, providing guidance, advice and support, fostering self-esteem.
  • Actively maintain the high standards of behaviour and dress of pupils in the classroom and in all school locations and activities.
  • Follow policies with regard to the health and safety of pupils both on and off the school premises when pupils are under the school’s jurisdiction.
  • Take a pastoral interest in pupils in curriculum and extra-curricular activities and around the school environs so that they feel noticed, valued and cared for.
  • Help students with strong links and mutual support within each House shape the House’s unique character.
  • Act as Tutor in one of the Upper School boarding or day Houses to a group of boys and/or girls (day pupils and boarders) as designated by the pastoral leadership of the School.
  • If a Tutor in a boarding House, undertaking supervision duties in that boarding House in line with duty expectations.
  • Implement safeguarding practices and procedures at the School.
  • Build strong relationships with parents through effective parent-teacher communication and home-school meetings and/or workshops as appropriate.
  • Undertake other reasonable duties (including cover for classes) as requested by members of the Senior Leadership Team and any duties that the Head Master/Mistress deems necessary for the effective operation of the school.

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree or above in any field.

Qualifications

  • Appropriate degree, with secondary education teacher training (in Secondary Biology education) recognised in Hong Kong (or the UK/mainland China), or other equivalent teaching qualification giving QTS.
  • Working experience and knowledge of the Secondary Biology Curriculum issued by the CDCHK or the KS1/3 and KS2/4 National Curriculum of England.
  • Proficiency in English for teaching purpose.
  • Evidence of relevant and challenging continuing professional development.
  • Acceptable personal and professional background checks with the ability to be allocated unsupervised access to children (as reported via an International Child Protection Certificate background check and/or appropriate police and other checks from relevant countries of present and previous residence/work).

Knowledge

  • A strong understanding of effective classroom pedagogical practice within a secondary school level setting.
  • Familiarity with the National Curriculum of England, including subject specifications at HKDSE or IBDP.

Experience

  • A minimum of two years of experience as a classroom practitioner.
  • If teacher training qualification was obtained during the last 3 years, please submit lesson observation records signed by a practicum supervisor when submitting your CV.
