Job Description

Job Overview:  

The Humanities Teacher (Economics, Individuals & Societies, and Entrepreneurship) is responsible for delivering engaging and insightful lessons to students in the fields of economics, social studies (I&S), and entrepreneurship. The role involves fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills in students while ensuring they develop a solid understanding of how societies function, economic principles, and the basics of starting and managing a business. 

 

Key Responsibilities: 

  1. Teaching and Lesson Planning: 
  • Teach Economics, I&S, and Entrepreneurship at the relevant grade levels (e.g., MYP, DP, or secondary level). 
  • Develop and implement engaging and comprehensive lesson plans that adhere to the curriculum standards and meet students' learning needs. 
  • Present and explain key concepts, theories, and models in Economics, I&S, and Entrepreneurship, promoting active student participation and discussion. 


  1. Student Assessment and Progress Monitoring: 
  • Develop and administer assessments such as quizzes, tests, assignments, projects, and presentations that measure students' understanding of economics, I&S, and entrepreneurship. 
  • Provide constructive feedback on student performance, focusing on strengths and areas for improvement. 
  • Track student progress through grading systems, reporting on academic achievements, and providing individualized support as needed. 


  1. Classroom Management: 
  • Establish clear classroom expectations and maintain a respectful and engaging learning environment. 
  • Use a variety of teaching techniques to manage the classroom effectively, promoting positive behavior and academic engagement. 
  • Deal with any behavioral issues promptly and fairly, maintaining a focus on student learning. 


  1. Instruction in Economics: 
  • Teach core economic concepts such as supply and demand, market structures, economic systems, global trade, and economic policies. 
  • Help students understand economic theory and real-world application, emphasizing critical analysis and data interpretation. 
  • Use case studies, simulations, and current events to illustrate economic principles and their impact on societies. 


  1. Instruction in Individuals & Societies (I&S): 
  • Teach topics related to history, geography, politics, culture, and society, exploring human behaviors and social structures. 
  • Foster critical thinking by encouraging students to question societal norms, historical events, and global issues from multiple perspectives. 
  • Engage students in debates, discussions, and projects that encourage the development of research, communication, and analytical skills. 


  1. Instruction in Entrepreneurship: 
  • Teach students the fundamentals of entrepreneurship, including business planning, marketing strategies, financial management, and innovation. 
  • Guide students in identifying business opportunities, developing business models, and creating business plans. 
  • Encourage students to think creatively and apply entrepreneurial principles in solving real-world challenges. 
  1. Curriculum Development: 
  • Collaborate with the Humanities Department to design and update the curriculum for Economics, I&S, and Entrepreneurship, ensuring it aligns with school goals and international standards. 
  • Continuously assess and refine lesson plans to meet the needs of diverse learners, including ELL and SEN students. 
  • Adapt curriculum materials and teaching strategies to reflect current global events, business trends, and societal changes. 


  1. Student Engagement and Development: 
  • Encourage active participation through group work, discussions, research assignments, and experiential learning activities. 
  • Create a classroom environment that is supportive and inclusive, where all students feel encouraged to share their ideas and perspectives. 
  • Provide additional support for students who may need help with understanding complex concepts or completing assignments. 


  1. Professional Development: 
  • Participate in departmental and school-wide professional development activities to stay updated on the latest teaching methodologies and trends in Economics, I&S, and Entrepreneurship education. 
  • Reflect on personal teaching practices, seeking feedback from colleagues and students to improve instruction. 
  • Share teaching strategies, resources, and best practices with colleagues to enhance the quality of education across the department. 


  1. Parent and Community Communication: 
  • Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress and areas of concern. 
  • Attend parent-teacher conferences and other school events to provide feedback on student achievement. 
  • Encourage student participation in extracurricular activities such as business competitions, Model UN, and other relevant projects. 

 

Qualifications and Skills: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in economics, Social Studies, Business, or a related field (master’s degree preferred). 
  • Teaching certification (if required by local regulations). 
  • Proven experience teaching Economics, I&S, and Entrepreneurship at the secondary or high school level. 
  • Knowledge of the IB curriculum (MYP, DP) is a plus. 
  • Strong understanding of economic theory, societal studies, and business management. 
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills. 
  • Ability to create engaging and thought-provoking lesson plans. 
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously. 
  • Experience in integrating technology and multimedia into lessons. 
  • Ability to foster a collaborative and inclusive learning environment. 


Working Conditions: 

  • Full-time teaching position. 
  • Classroom-based work with regular school hours. 
  • Opportunities for extracurricular involvement, such as coaching business clubs, Model UN, and student entrepreneurship events. 
  • Collaboration with other department staff for cross-curricular projects.
