Job Description

POSITION: School Counselor
REPORTS TO: School Principal / Student Support Lead
FTE: Full Time

SUMMARY OF POSITION
The School Counselor provides socio-emotional support, guidance, and intervention services that promote student well‑being, resilience, and academic success across the school. Working within a student-centered framework, the counselor delivers individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, social-emotional learning (SEL) programming, and consultation with teachers and families. The role emphasizes prevention, early intervention, and collaborative strategies to build a safe, inclusive, and nurturing school climate aligned with the school’s mission and values of leadership, wisdom, and integrity.

Additional School Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in School Counseling, Clinical Counseling, School Psychology, or related field (required) 
  • State/national counseling credential or licensure as required 
  • Minimum 3 years counseling experience in K–12 or international school settings, with strong background in socio-emotional interventions 
  • Knowledge of evidence-based SEL programs, trauma-informed practices, and restorative approaches 
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and cultural competence skills 
  • Experience with referral processes, community resources, and crisis response protocols

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide short-term individual counseling and support to students for social, emotional, behavioral, and academic concerns 
  • Facilitate small-group counseling and targeted SEL interventions (e.g., anger management, social skills, grief support) 
  • Implement school-wide SEL programming and partner with teachers to integrate SEL into classroom routines and curriculum 
  • Conduct intake assessments, develop student support plans, and track progress using data to inform interventions 
  • Collaborate closely with teachers, administrators, specialists, and families to develop coordinated strategies that support student learning and well‑being 
  • Lead crisis response and safety planning, including timely communication and coordination with leadership and families 
  • Maintain confidential records, provide referrals to external mental-health providers, and assist families in accessing community resources 
  • Deliver staff training and consultation on socio-emotional topics, classroom management strategies, and early-identification practices 
  • Participate in multidisciplinary meetings (IEP/504, student support teams) and contribute to development of behavioral supports and accommodations 
  • Promote a positive school climate through outreach, preventative workshops, and student leadership initiatives focused on empathy, resilience, and healthy relationships 
  • Monitor and report trends in student needs to inform schoolwide prevention and wellness planning 
  • Attend staff meetings, professional development, and contribute to school policies related to student welfare 
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal or Student Support Lead
