Job Description

Position Purpose

The Special Education Teacher supports students with diverse learning needs through individualized planning, targeted intervention, collaboration with teachers and families, and ongoing progress monitoring.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Special Education, Inclusive Education, Psychology, Education, or a related field.
  • Experience supporting students with diverse learning needs.
  • Strong understanding of differentiated instruction and accommodations.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.


Preferred:

  • Master's Degree in Special Education, Educational Psychology, Learning Support, or related field.
  • Experience in an international school setting.
  • Experience with inclusion models and MTSS/SST frameworks.
  • Experience supporting executive functioning, dyslexia, ADHD, autism, and other learning differences.

Key Responsibilities

1. Student Support & Intervention

  • Provide direct support to students with identified learning needs.
  • Deliver small-group and individual interventions.
  • Support students in developing academic, executive functioning, organizational, self-regulation, and self-advocacy skills.
  • Adapt instruction and materials when appropriate.
  • Support students in accessing grade-level curriculum whenever possible.
  • Foster student independence and confidence rather than dependency on adult support.
  • Assist students in developing strategies that can be generalized across settings.
  • Support inclusion within the classroom whenever appropriate.

2. Individualized Plans (IPs)

  • Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Plans.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers, counselors, administrators, and families in the development of IPs.
  • Ensure plans are strengths-based and student-centered.
  • Establish measurable goals and appropriate accommodations.
  • Monitor student progress toward goals.
  • Update ILPs regularly based on student growth and evolving needs.
  • Participate in student support meetings and review cycles.
  • Maintain organized records of accommodations, interventions, and progress.

3. Consultation & Collaboration

  • Partner closely with classroom teachers to support inclusive practices.
  • Provide recommendations for accommodations, modifications, interventions, and instructional strategies.
  • Help teachers understand student learning profiles and areas of need.
  • Model effective instructional approaches when appropriate.
  • Collaborate with counselors, administrators, ESOL teachers, psychologists, and other support staff.
  • Participate actively in SST (Student Support Team) meetings.
  • Support teachers in implementing accommodations consistently across classes.

4. Assessment & Progress Monitoring

  • Review psychoeducational evaluations and relevant student records.
  • Assist in the interpretation of assessment results.
  • Collect and analyze student data.
  • Monitor academic, behavioral, and executive functioning growth.
  • Recommend interventions based on student needs.
  • Contribute to decisions regarding student support services.
  • Prepare progress reports related to ILP goals.

5. Family Partnership

  • Develop positive relationships with families.
  • Communicate regularly regarding student growth and support strategies.
  • Participate in parent conferences and support meetings.
  • Help families understand accommodations, interventions, and student progress.
  • Collaborate with families to create consistency between home and school when appropriate.

6. Inclusion & Student Advocacy

  • Promote a culture of belonging and inclusion.
  • Advocate for student needs while maintaining high expectations.
  • Help students understand their strengths and learning profiles.
  • Encourage student voice and self-advocacy.
  • Support student participation in academic, social, and extracurricular opportunities.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Attend faculty meetings and professional development sessions.
  • Participate in school initiatives related to wellbeing, inclusion, and student support.
  • Contribute to the development and refinement of student support systems.
  • Support transitions between grade levels and divisions.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student information.
  • Stay current with best practices in special education, inclusion, executive functioning, and intervention.
