Job Description

Role Overview

The Primary Learning Support teacher is responsible for delivering high-quality literacy and numeracy intervention tailored to students with a range of special education needs, including autism, speech and language needs, and learning difficulties. The successful candidate will play a key role in improving students’ reading and writing skills and mathematical understanding, ensuring all learners can access a meaningful and inclusive curriculum.

Teaching and learning at Hope Academy is grounded in an individualized approach. The successful candidate will be skilled in working with students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), using data-driven and formative assessment practices to identify learning gaps and deliver high-impact instruction. The teacher will also support students’ social-emotional development and executive functioning skills, ensuring a holistic approach to student success.

Key Responsibilities

Teaching and Learning

  • Plan, deliver, and evaluate targeted literacy and math interventions for students with SEN (in class collaborative teaching and small group intervention)
  • Support the development of reading, phonics, writing, communication, and foundational numeracy skills
  • Support students through push-in and pull-out models
  • Differentiate instruction to meet diverse learning needs, including students with additional or complex needs
  • Assess student progress in reading, writing, and numeracy to inform teaching approaches accordingly
  • Implement and embed specialist tools and approaches (e.g., phonemic awareness activities, multisensory learning, digital resources)

 

Student Development

  • Support students’ social, emotional, and behavioral development
  • Implement appropriate accommodations and interventions to support diverse learners
  • Promote independence, curiosity, and a positive attitude toward learning
  • Communicate regularly with parents regarding progress and wellbeing
  • Maintain a safe, nurturing, and inclusive learning environment

 

Collaboration and School Contribution

  • Work closely with class teachers, Support for Learning assistants, SENCo, and external professionals to implement effective strategies
  • Engage with SENCo and support staff to ensure effective provision for all learners
  • Liaise with the SENCo to provide guidance, mentorship, and collaboration to support teaching assistants, including modelling best practice, guided intervention delivery, and building capacity within the Support for Learning team
  • Participate in meetings, professional development, and school initiatives
  • Contribute to whole-school activities, events, and extracurricular programs
  • Build strong partnerships with families and the wider school community


Administration and Professional Duties

  • Maintain accurate records of student progress and contribute to review meetings and reporting
  • Monitor, track, and review Individual Education Plans (IEPs), ensuring progress is measured and provision is adapted accordingly
  • Complete reports and required documentation in a timely manner
  • Supervise students during break, lunch, and other assigned duties
  • Provide class cover when required within agreed guidelines
  • Attend IEP meetings and parent-teacher conferences for students on SEN caseload
