Economics Teacher – April 2027

Salesian International School – Tokyo, Japan
Start Date: April 2027
Contract: April 2027 – March 2028 (Renewable)

Salesian International School is seeking a qualified and enthusiastic Economics teacher to join our international program beginning in April 2027.

The successful candidate will teach Economics to junior and senior high school students (Years 7–12) in our English-medium program, with a particular focus on senior high school Economics courses. Depending on scheduling needs and the candidate’s qualifications, there may also be opportunities to teach related subjects, such as Business Studies, Social Studies, or other humanities courses.

Our students are generally bilingual or native speakers of English, and classes emphasize economic literacy, analytical thinking, problem-solving, communication, creativity, and critical thinking.

Responsibilities

  • Teach Economics courses to junior and senior high school students (Years 7–12), with an emphasis on senior high school.
  • Plan and deliver engaging, well-structured lessons appropriate for a range of abilities.
  • Develop students’ understanding of microeconomics, macroeconomics, international trade, and global economic issues.
  • Encourage students to apply economic theories and concepts to real-world situations through case studies, research, data analysis, and discussions.
  • Design lessons using project-based and problem-based learning (PBL) approaches where appropriate.
  • Develop students’ financial and economic literacy, analytical skills, and ability to evaluate economic decisions and policies.
  • Manage the classroom to support an active, respectful, and collaborative learning environment.
  • Provide individual feedback and academic support to students.
  • Assess student learning and maintain accurate records of progress.
  • Collaborate with colleagues within the department and across the school.
  • Support interdisciplinary and international learning opportunities where appropriate.

Teachers are encouraged to create inquiry-based and discussion-driven learning experiences that connect economic concepts to current events, business, financial decision-making, and global challenges. Lessons should encourage students to evaluate different perspectives, interpret economic data, and develop informed, evidence-based arguments.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Economics, Business, Economics Education, Education, or a related field.
  • Teaching qualification or relevant secondary-school teaching experience preferred.
  • Experience teaching junior and/or senior high school students preferred.
  • Strong subject knowledge in Economics, particularly microeconomics and macroeconomics.
  • Ability to teach effectively in an English-medium international program.
  • Experience teaching senior high school Economics or internationally recognized Economics curricula is an advantage.
  • Ability to incorporate current economic events, case studies, and data analysis into classroom instruction.
  • Interest in project-based learning, inquiry-based learning, and interdisciplinary teaching.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to encourage discussion, independent thinking, and active participation.
