Middle School / High School English Teacher

ACS International School Doha (ACS Doha)

Position Overview

ACS Doha is seeking an engaging and skilled English Teacher to join our Middle School and High School team. This role requires a teacher who can develop strong readers, writers, and critical thinkers through a rigorous, standards-based program aligned to American and IB frameworks.

Our English teachers foster a love of language and literature while holding students to high expectations in reading, writing, speaking, and analysis. At ACS Doha, teaching is grounded in strong relationships, purposeful planning, and responsive instruction.

Key Responsibilities

1. Planning & Preparation for Learning

  • Design and deliver standards-aligned units in reading, writing, speaking, and listening (AERO/Common Core and IB MYP/DP where applicable)
  • Develop clear learning objectives, success criteria, and aligned assessments
  • Plan units around essential questions, themes, and authentic texts (literature and informational)
  • Build coherent writing instruction across genres (narrative, argumentative, analytical, and research)
  • Anticipate student misconceptions in reading comprehension, writing, and language use
  • Differentiate instruction to support a wide range of learners, including EAL students
  • Use Toddle and other platforms to organize and communicate learning

2. Classroom Environment & Management

  • Create a classroom culture that values voice, respect, and intellectual risk-taking
  • Establish clear expectations for behavior, participation, and academic integrity
  • Build strong, respectful relationships with students
  • Implement consistent routines that maximize learning time
  • Foster student independence, accountability, and ownership of learning

3. Delivery of Instruction

  • Deliver clear, structured, and engaging lessons in reading, writing, and discussion
  • Model and explicitly teach reading strategies, writing processes, and analytical thinking
  • Use a variety of instructional approaches (close reading, workshop model, discussion protocols, direct instruction)
  • Engage students in meaningful discourse, critical thinking, and textual analysis
  • Promote a growth mindset and resilience in writing and revision
  • Adapt instruction based on student understanding and performance
  • Connect texts and themes to real-world contexts and diverse perspectives

4. Assessment, Feedback & Follow-Up

  • Use formative and summative assessments to monitor student progress in literacy skills
  • Provide timely, specific, and actionable feedback on student writing and thinking
  • Use rubrics and exemplars to clarify expectations for high-quality work
  • Support students in revision, reflection, and goal-setting
  • Use data to adjust instruction and provide targeted support or extension
  • Collaborate with colleagues to analyze student work and improve instruction

5. Family & Community Engagement

  • Maintain consistent communication with parents regarding student progress and expectations
  • Share both positive updates and areas for growth
  • Build respectful relationships with families from diverse backgrounds
  • Respond promptly and professionally to parent communication
  • Contribute to school events, literacy initiatives, and community engagement opportunities

6. Professional Responsibilities & Collaboration

  • Actively participate in collaborative planning and curriculum development
  • Contribute to a shared understanding of high-quality teaching and learning at ACS Doha
  • Engage in ongoing professional learning and implement best practices
  • Reflect on teaching and seek feedback to continuously improve
  • Maintain high standards of professionalism, reliability, and ethical conduct
  • Contribute to the broader life of the school, including extracurricular activities

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Literature, or a related field (Master’s preferred)
  • Valid teaching certification
  • Experience teaching middle and/or high school English
  • Strong understanding of standards-based literacy instruction
  • Experience with IB (MYP/DP) is preferred but not required
  • Experience working with multilingual learners is an advantage
