As a Head of Department, Your duties should be carried out with due regard to the school's vision, mission and objectives, and any policies of Liwa International School for Girls. You should share in the corporate responsibility for the well-being and discipline of all students and staff. In addition to the relevant responsibilities Heads of Department make the education of their students their first concern, and are accountable for achieving the highest possible standards in work and conduct. Heads of Department act with honesty and integrity; have strong subject knowledge, keep their knowledge and skills as leaders up-to-date and are self-critical; forge positive professional relationships; and work with parents and staff in the best interests of their students.

Specific additional responsibilities – Heads of Department

  • The development and implementation of the Departmental Action Plan in line with the requirements of the 2-year School Development Plan and departmental priorities.
  • To be responsible to the assigned Vice Principal or Acting Vice Principal for the quality of teaching and learning in your subject department of the school.
  • To be responsible for ensuring that all teachers in your department have undertaken effective planning for the term.
  • To be responsible for ensuring that all teachers in your department have completed and implemented the three-part lesson plan which has clear learning objectives and key words and that the learning objectives and key words are displayed for each lesson.
  • To be responsible for monitoring and evaluating the quality of teaching and learning by observing teaching, scrutinizing planning and students’ work and providing developmental feedback to teachers on how they can improve.
  • To meet every four weeks with the SENCO to review progress of students who are categorized as Level 2 and level 3 on the three-tier system
  • To support teachers who have students categorized at Level 1 and Level 2 on the three-tier system.
  • To ensure that all teachers enter student progress data into the electronic tracking tool and that periodic meetings take place to discuss the progress of students (at least twice a term).
  • To ensure that teachers have identified those students who are not making expected progress and are providing a differentiated programme for them (Level 1 on the three-tier system.
  • To control, evaluate and order materials and equipment for teaching within the confines of the school budget.
  • To attend professional development programmes in order to be up-to-date with the latest thinking and research on your subject and to organize workshops for members of staff of your department.
  • To liaise with other schools so ensuring up to date knowledge of current development with regard to good practice.
  • To promote parental interest and understanding.
  • To be responsible for monitoring/evaluating/disseminating policy/advice/support for health and safety issues relating to your subject.
  • Discuss how the school’s SDP will be implemented by the department and develop an Action Plan which is forwarded to your assigned Vice Principal or Assistant Vice Principal and all department team members before the end of June.
  • Ensure that all members of the department team have a copy of the school’s strategic plan, SDP, department Action Plan, Code of Conduct, Marking policy, AfL policy, Behavior Management policy.
  • Ensure that all members of the department team have a planning folder, which is updated regularly.
  • Ensure that the implementation of the Action Plan is monitored regularly and progress is reviewed at a departmental team meeting at least monthly. Write a brief report on the evidence of progress and forward to the assigned Vice Principal or Assistant Vice Principal on a termly basis.
  • Undertake the performance management review of all teachers in the department.
  • Meet regularly with the grade leaders and ensure that the departmental priorities are being implemented and addressed.
  • Participate in professional networks, share best practice and attend national, local and school based training when necessary.
  • Attend assembly every day in addition to the duties of a school teacher
  • Undertake other roles and responsibilities as required by the assigned Assistant Vice Principal or Vice Principal
