ROLE SUMMARY:

The International School of Milan (ISM), part of the Inspired Education Group, is seeking an experienced and dynamic Head of Physical Education to lead the PE department from August 2026.

This is a key leadership role responsible for the strategic development and delivery of the Physical Education programme across the Secondary School. The successful candidate will oversee curriculum planning, staff development and the wider sports programme, ensuring students benefit from a high-quality, engaging and inclusive physical education experience.


The Head of PE will teach within the IB framework, contributing to both the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) and IB Diploma Programme (DP) where appropriate, while also leading the development of co-curricular sport and promoting student wellbeing through physical activity.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead and manage the Physical Education department across the Secondary School
  • Oversee curriculum planning, development and implementation within the IB framework
  • Teach Physical and Health Education within the MYP and potentially contribute to the IB Diploma Programme
  • Develop and maintain a broad and engaging sports and physical activity programme
  • Support and develop PE staff through coaching, mentoring and professional development
  • Promote high standards of teaching, learning and student achievement in PE
  • Coordinate fixtures, sports events and co-curricular activities where appropriate
  • Monitor student progress and use data to support curriculum improvement
  • Work closely with the wider leadership team to promote health, wellbeing and school engagement
  • Contribute positively to the wider life of the school community


THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:

Essential

  • A degree in Physical Education, Sports Science or a related field
  • A recognised teaching qualification
  • Proven experience teaching PE at secondary level
  • Previous leadership experience (e.g., Head of Department or subject coordinator)
  • Strong organisational and communication skills
  • Ability to inspire students and staff in a dynamic school environment
  • Legal right to live and work in Italy (EU passport or valid work permit)


Desirable

  • Experience teaching within the IB MYP and/or DP
  • Experience managing competitive sports programmes and school events
  • Experience in an international school setting
  • Italian language skills (advantageous but not essential)
